I want to Upgrade from 12.04 LTS 32-bit to 14.04 LTS 64-bit system. If I use the Update Manager to do this, will it automatically use the 32 bit version, or the 64 bit version? Will I be asked which one to install?
Thanks,
Greg

I believe if you have a 32bit version already installed it will upgrade to the 32bit version, same thing goes with 64bit. Either way, back up important data before doing the upgrade, it is just the sensible thing to do.

How do I go about upgrading to the 14.04 64-bit system if Update Mgr automatically defaults to 32-bit?

Downloading the 64bit iso image and creating a DVD/USB boot media for a fresh install would be easiest in my opinion. Is your CPU capable of running a 64bit OS and how much RAM do you have?
Again, just to be clear.. backing up data is essential.

The other year I was watching a video conference during which a Canonical engineer was asked about the possibility of arranging for users of 32 bit Ubuntu to upgrade to 64 bit Ubuntu by means of some kind of script. His reply was.
"Erm. Technically possible. But non-trivial to do." And that effectively ended the discussion.
To switch from 32 bit Ubuntu to 64 bit Ubuntu, backup your data and do a fresh install.

I'd say, with those specs, an upgrade to 64-bit might be worth the hassle of fresh install.

I'd say, with those specs, an upgrade to 64-bit might be worth the hassle of fresh install.
And I'd say it is very nearly essential!
Regrettably there is absolutely no way to upgrade to a 64bit system from a 32bit system, so a clean install is the only way to go.
