when I hit f5 on firefox in ubuntu 14.04 it goes to google instead of refreshing my page. How do I make it stop this annoying behaviour and make it do what I want?

Is it a laptop?
Some laptops (and small keyboards in general) have a bunch of other functions mapped over the top of F keys that do different things, and you need to hold the [FN] (or equivalent) key to get to the proper f-key inputs.
You can usually reverse this in BIOS - so that it defaults to F1 - F12 instead of the "media" functions.

+1.
If that doesn't apply, try safe mode.

F5 on my laptop refreshes the page on FireFox.
Works as should.
