Often better to use UEFI. But almost all systems will work with the 35 year old BIOS.
If only installing Ubuntu then you can use gpt partitioning. But if installing Windows to dual boot, Windows only boots with UEFI from gpt partitioned drives.
I only partition with gpt on all new or totally reformatted drives. But I include both the ESP - efi system partition for UEFI boot and the bios_grub partition for BIOS boot whether system is UEFI or BIOS.

Most with older versions of Ubuntu, but install should be easier/better now:

This was an old bug on some older Samsungs. Linux made fixes, but if an older system be sure to download the newest UEFI/BIOS from Samsung as that was the real issue.

Booting the Ubuntu installer in UEFI mode from a USB disk on certain Samsung laptops (530U3C, NP700Z5C) may trigger a firmware bug that renders the machine unbootable. Users are advised to use caution when installing on Samsung laptops and ensure that they are configured for legacy BIOS mode, not UEFI mode. (1040557)

The problem also appears to affect Ubuntu 12.10 and other Samsung models. The Ubuntu bug report includes posts from users reporting that the problem also affects 300E5C, NP700Z5C, NP700Z7C and NP900X4C series laptops.
