View Full Version : ubuntu 14.04 fails to boot xsession

Hi,

I should have learned y lesson by now but was fiddling about building software from sources and was getting a little frustrated when something wouldn't build and installed a few dependencies absent mindedly. When I restarted my system I can't boot into a graphical environment:(

This is as far as I get:
1) GRUB menu appears as normal
2) Ubuntu Studio splash screen appears briefly, then disappears
3) Single cursor appears in top left corner (not blinking)
4) Ubuntu GUI login does NOT appear
5) I can log in to a tty terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1-F6; but can't seem to get into a GUI
6) once logged into tty the display keeps reverting to the cursor in the top left until I hit CTRL+ALT+F1-F6 again to revert back to the terminal session I'm already logged in to.

Checked some of my logs and this caught my eye from the Xorg.0.log:

[ 10.402] (II) LoadModule: "glx"
[ 10.402] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
[ 10.402] (EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[ 10.402] (II) UnloadModule: "glx"
[ 10.402] (II) Unloading glx
[ 10.402] (EE) Failed to load module "glx" (loader failed, 7)

My laptop screen is on its way out and occasionally craps but I am able to boot into an Ubuntu Studio Live USB and Fedora 21 build (which I have on a separate partition on my hard drive) so I'm pretty sure its not a hardware problem.

I've a feeling I might have installed/removed something related to libGL, but unsure how to fix this. I have managed to apt-get update//upgrade my system successfully. I've also searched this and the Ubuntu Stack Exchange Forum but can't find anything of much use - other than to check the boot and Xorg logs.

Has anyone got any ideas?!

Cheers

Martyn

p.s. I'm running Ubuntu Studio 14.04.3 on a Clevo W740 laptop with Intel Graphics Card.
