I installed Gnome by typing this into a terminal window.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop
rebooted and now at login, I can choose to log into Gnome or Unity. Great right? Well, almost... When I log into unity, I see the default wallpaper now, can't change it and I can no longer see the files on my desktop. They ARE there though as I can see them on the desktop through the file manager.
Is this a known issue that's easily fixed? Searching didn't turn up any answers.
