Software Index is broken

Hello, i am having a problem updating the software.. i searched for the problem and it looks like beacuse of missing linux headers.. tried a few things to install them and found out i dont have enough space to install them as i am running linux on a usb stick.. i wanted to remove some headers from /usr/src but not sure which ones to remove.. Pls help me out with this problem.. Greatly appreciate the help.

To free some up, let's remove the old kernel headers you're not going to need.

Copy and paste these commands into the terminal.


sudo dpkg -P linux-headers-3.16.0-{31,33,34,36,37,38,45,46,48,49}{,-generic}


sudo apt-get -f install

Post back any error and then post the output of


df -i
df -h

To note: you only have 2.7G on your root partition.

It'll remove packages that have been installed for other packages, but are now no longer required.

Your kernel headers were such packages but the autoremove command will not run if the partition is too full (as you have seen :)) I'm not sure of the state of autoremove at the moment though, as i tend to do most things manually.

You should run it often or enable autoremove automatically, so the package manager will run it for you.
