Hi all

A few days ago i tried installing ubuntu and formatting hard drive. It was weird, i installed it but didnt let me format. It got installed, i booted and nothing i couldnt start ubuntu when clicking icon nothing happened. I tried making the usb install thing and not sure it worked.
Anyways i went on holiday for a couple of days and forgot my laptop on when i come back the screen is black saying thi

SYSLINUX 4.07 EDD 4.06-pre7 Copyright (C) 1994-2013 H. Peter Anvin et al

theres a flashing underscore like the dos days but i cant type anything. Turning it on and off font make it forget it either.

Is there anything i can do? Or just chuck the laptop out and get a new one from china?

Hello!

The hardware specs of your machine would also be quite helpful.

HI thanks for help

this is the link:

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/

as to the specs i cant go intothe machine to ask what they are, All i know is its an asus with about 2. not many ghz like 4 of ram and thats all i now.

What worres me is that i think i may have formatted the drve in the end or maybe the laptop re booted itself while away (or cats did it) and the things took effect? Also the fact i cant type anything? I mean theres literally nothing can do apart from pushing the power button!

thanks for help

If no partitions were formatted, then it did not get installed. Which installation type option did you select when you installed?

What icon are you referring to? There should be no "icon", you should see a boot menu or in your case, since this is the only operating system on the computer it would simply boot to the Desktop where you could login. The Syslinux message you posted would be from the installation medium which you tried to use to install. Did you initially use a DVD or did you use a flash drive to try to install? If you used a flash drive, what software did you use to create a bootable flash drive?

SYSLINUX is not normally used for booting full Linux installations since Linux is not normally installed on FAT filesystems. Instead, it is often used for boot or rescue floppy discs, live USBs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SYSLINUX), or other lightweight boot systems. ISOLINUX is generally used by Linux live CDs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_CD) and bootable install CDs.
2nd vote for removing the install media
