Gnome Classic - move (or change) panels?

Hi All


I've just installed Ubuntu 15.04 with Gnome 3.14.4 ... and I've spent about 5 hours trying to change the panel (s)

You used to be able to click window+alt+right-click to add/remove things from it, and now it appears you can't.

The network part of the indicator applet used to have options for connecting to VPNs as well... and these seem to be gone - in fact the whole indicator applet seems to have deteriorated badly. Is there another version I should be running?


I'd be most grateful if anyone could give me pointers as to how to restore previous functionality (without going back to a previous version of ubuntu/gnome). This is seriously doing my head in - panel behaviour is absolutely fundamental to how I use this system.

Ctrl-alt right click doesn't do anything - I can't find any combination of keys that makes any difference.

Hmm... ok - I guess I can try upgrading to 15.10

Okay - upgraded to 15.10 - no difference.

So two issues:

1) the panels seem to be uncustomiseable... you can't add/remove things.

2) the new indicator applets (especially network) have severely diminished functionality - eg: there's no way to add a VPN.


I don't suppose anyone knows how to restore this functionality?

I needed to use the Compiz version of gnome. All problems solved :)

Hmm, gnome-classic or gnome-flashback?

gnome classic is built off of extensions for gnome shell.
So while it looks like the old gnome design, it lacks a ton of functionality.

gnome flashback is what looks and acts like the old design.
That hasn't really changed all that much since 12.04.
