I recently built a pc and installed Ubuntu on it, and the installation would work fine as long as I added nomodeset as a launch parameter so I wouldn't get a black screen, and at this point I can boot and use Ubuntu absolutely fine.
However if I update my Ubuntu installation, after I restart my computer I'm unable to boot and am stuck with an error of:
Starting version 219
BUG: soft lockup - CPU# stuck for ##s!
... (bug repeats forever with any one of my cpu cores or any number of seconds reported but never boots)

What's sad is that my computer is working perfectly fine as long as I don't update, but as soon as I do it becomes unusable and I lose everything and have to reinstall Ubuntu.
Please help me, I don't know what to do.

My specs:
OS: Ubuntu 15.04
CPU: Intel i5 4690k 3.5Ghz
GPU: MSI GTX 980 4GB Twin Frozr
RAM: 8gbx2 1866Mhz CAS 9 DDR3 G.skill Sniper
Mobo: Gigabyte G1 Sniper Z97
Storage: WD Blue 1tb 7200rpm
