From http://www.ubuntuvideo.com :

Ubuntu Video showcases the best Ubuntu Linux videos on the Internet, encourages Ubuntu Linux users to record their own videos, and gives them the information they need start production. It’s time to show Windows and Mac users what they’re missing.

I watched the "Adventures in Linux - Episode 1 - Ubuntu" it's kinda funy :).

I blogged about this here :
http://ubuntudemon.wordpress.com/2006/08/06/ubuntu-video-share-your-ubuntu-with-the-world/

It's also on the digg here :

Thanks!

I've added Ubuntu Video to the Marketing Team projects wiki, If anyone wants to help out with the project check out the "How can I help? (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam/UbuntuVideo#head-cf39b79827c222add88260e6d4cf240e62578bf2)" section.

Is it a good thing that in order to see the videos we have to rely on closed source software?

johnwlittle

The videos are those that have been uploaded by Ubuntu users to services such as YouTube and Google. They services make the videos available to stream with Flash. If I want to stream them - share them with the vast majority of web surfers who can watch them - I have to use the tools those services provide.

Can you provide a FOSS, and video hosting, alternative?

Course not, what you're doing is a great thing overall. It's only that having to rely on flash is a pity.

Agreed.

A couple of Ubuntu team members have mentioned that they would like to work on something like a Ubuntu specific YouTube alternative. I'd like to see it happen but I'll use whatever is available until then.

I could just link to videos but I don't think that's nearly as compelling, or user friendly, as having them embedded.

Right you are.

johnwlittle maybe you could add the "Experience ubuntu.ogg" with Nelson Mandela from the Examples dir. I don't know whether this is easily possible. IMHO it's a great video.

On a related note : I would also like to see that video on http://www.legaltorrents.com/index.htm

Dear "ubuntu_daemon",

Thanks for the link:

http://www.ubuntuvideo.com

I tried to watch the first Video in the above site, but unfortunately, even though the video was coming out fine, the audio was coming out "crappy"...

Too many "pauses" came out in between every word spoken...

I have an ADSL 384K speed connection.

I think that, to be able to watch the above Video, maybe a faster ADSL connection is required...

Has anybody tried watching it with an ADSL 512K speed?

Just wondering...

Thanks.

If they're going to promote this type of thing, why in the world won't they put Cinelerra in the repositories?

Flash sound can be kind of buggy in my experience. If you have other media players running in the background (xmms or mplayer) it can have an impact. Sometimes closing all instances of the browers and restarting will work.

If you've never had sound in Flash then check the forums for the minor configuration changes you'll need to make.

YouTube has a troubleshooting page too: http://youtube.com/t/help_troubleshoot

As for speed YouTube specifies a "Broadband connection with 500+ Kbps"

$sudo apt-get install mozilla-plugin-vlc
$sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
$sudo update-flashplugin

Restart firefox and try again.
If it still doesn't work then log out (gnome) and log back in again. Now it should work (AFAIK).

If your links to Ubuntu Video are broken it's because the site has undergone a massive update. There's a new platfrom and a new look..,..a very Ubuntuish look

http://www.ubuntuvideo.com

There's also a new contest worth $100 to the winner:

http://www.ubuntuvideo.com/?q=could_you_use_a_hundred_bucks

Hope everyone likes the new layout.

Send me your vids!

You guys might want to read this, from Planet GNOME (http://planet.gnome.org/):

Direct link to the blog entry:
http://www.figuiere.net/hub/blog/?2006/08/15/443-the-hype-or-the-freedom

Perhaps a very visible "disclaimer" could be included? Or making it less look like the official Ubuntu website?

The good news is that it's getting some attention to have reached GNOME devs outside of Ubuntu. :D

The theme on Ubuntu Video was supplied by the marketing team. The revised about page also makes everythng very clear. I did neglect to add the creative commons tag and Canonical trademark information in the footer in my haste to transfer over everything to the new CMS and template but that's been corrected.

I've added quite a few new features this week.

1. There's a new "Flash free" section on the right sidebar with .Ogg, Avi, and Mpg videos for those without flash players.

2. There are web buttons (http://www.ubuntuvideo.com/ubuntu_video_buttons) for those of you who want to link to Ubuntu Video from your websites/blogs

3. The RSS feed (http://www.ubuntuvideo.com/feed) has been activated.

and there's a new "Ubuntu Video News" section at the top of every page.

I still need tons more Ubuntu-related videos and the $100 video contest (http://ubuntuvideo.com/could_you_use_a_hundred_bucks) is still running.

Thanks.

I forgot to add that there's a page dedicated to blog links as well. If you have a blog and discuss Ubuntu stuff (that's not already on the list) send me your url and I'll add it to the blogroll (http://www.ubuntuvideo.com/ubuntu_blogs).

I've been working with the creator of Captorials.com (http://www.captorials.com/) to leverage his screencasting and hosting system for tutorials. You can see it in action on Ubuntu Video at:

http://ubuntuvideo.com/burning_an_iso_to_cd_with_ubuntu

If you're looking for a way to lend a hand, both with Ubuntu Video and the community at large, I could use a lot more tutorials for Ubuntu Video. Sign up for the free Captorials service, create an Ubuntu tutorial, and shoot me an email once it is live and I'll post it on Ubuntu Video. Captorial tutorials that are posted on Ubuntu Video are eligible for the $100 prize if they're submitted before September 30, 2006.

Captorials is getting quite a bit of tech press so it will be beneficial to populate the site with a lot of Ubuntu tutorials as well.

Thanks!

P.S. Feel free to forward this message on to other Ubuntu users or mailing lists.

The new Mac ad is great. I hope someone in the community can step up and create something like this for Ubuntu:
