Hi.

I was wondering, do most routers use open-source or proprietary software on the Internet and in peoples homes?

Is CISCO (closed-source) the main player in routers worldwide?

What routers use open-source/free software?

Thanks.

Not an Ubuntu support question; moved to Cafe.

MS Windows is used on a small niche market segment called desktop computing. Linux/Unix runs on everything else. So by extension, most routers run OSS.

Being Unix-like does not make a thing open source. Routers are e very likely to contain s some proprietary code. It doesn't matter, but my understanding is that they generally do.

It depends on what you classify as a router.

Dedicated Hardware

Cisco IOS - Not open source
Brocade - Not open source
JunOS (Juniper) - Partly open source
Mikrotik - Not Open Source
UBNT - Not Open Source, uses part Vyatta/VyOS code. Not sure if they have an agreement with Brocade to use new Vyatta code from them.

Software Routers:

VyOS (Vyatta fork, Vyatta is closed source since being acquired by Brocade) - Open Source
PfSense - Open Source
DLINK - Depends, some are Open Source, have to request them to send a CD/DVD if interested
OpenWRT/DD-Wrt/et all - Open Source
+ many other software routers that would take forever to list

I think most routers tend to be closed source. I think it comes from the mindset of security through obscurity. Since people don't have access to the code, the router will be more secure.

I have been seeing more routers supporting DD-WRT and others, but few come with it from the factory.
