I had the same problem. Tried to upgrade from 14.04 to 15.10 and everything crashed. So I reinstalled 14.04 from disk. Apparently I have to upgrade step by step. So how do I upgrade from 14.04 to 14.10?

Post moved to its own thread.

Please specify if you're running the desktop or server version of Ubuntu.

Because 14.10 is end-of-life, upgrading to it is not going to be easy, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades
It might be simpler to wait until 16.04 LTS is released, then you can upgrade directly from 14.04 to 16.04.

For those who do not know.

With LTS release we can upgrade directly to the next LTS release. In fact Software & Updates will be set to notify us of the next LTS release. With interim releases we can only update to the next release. And Software & Updates is set accordingly. We can change these settings.

Interim releases only have 9 months support. So, if we install an interim release we should get used to the practice of upgrading to the next release within 3 months of its release. If we are on an LTS release and it is 6 months or less to the next LTS release, then it is best to wait.

Regards.

I'm running Desktop version.

The earlier thread said you can't upgrade directly from 14.04 to 15.10. Apparently you have to do it step by step--i.e. from 14.04 to 14.10 to 15.04, etc. Now you say I can't upgrade from 14.04 to 14.10. Since my last message, I tried to upgrade from 14.04 to 15.04. But it then said I was missing a file and should switch to a different download relay. All I'm trying to do is upgrade my OS. It shouldn't be this difficult. Help!

Well technically there isn't anything to upgrade. You are on the latest LongTermSupport release. The next LTS comes out in April '16, then there is something to upgrade.

I didn't say you couldn't upgrade from 14.04 to 14.10, I said that because 14.10 is now EOL, upgrading to it wouldn't be easy. Please visit the link I posted earlier that outlines EOL upgrades; then you can determine whether or not you want to proceed, or wait until 16.04 is released next April.
