View Full Version : Ubuntu desktop on server hardware

Hey guys I have some server hardware and I was wondering if I could put a desktop Ubuntu distro on it.
Motherboard:Supermicro motherboard: X7DBE
Cpus: 2x Intel SLANG 1.86GHz dual-core processors
Ram:6x Kingston KVR667D2D4F5/2G sticks

Does the machine have a video adapter?

Yes it has a vga port, and pcie slots so I could add a video card

Yes it has a dvi out, plus it had a pcie slot so I could a video card later down the line

I was hoping for a bit of information on the video capabilities because you left that out of the hardware specs that you provided. Hardware is just hardware but server machines do not usually run a graphical desktop environment. So, they may not have a video adapter capable of running a desktop distribution.

There is a minimum graphic capability requirement for Ubuntu. It is most certainly possible to install the standard Ubuntu desktop distribution on server hardware but the hardware has to meet the minimum specifications.
