My first 14.04 is running on a fast Win 7 PC from a 32 GB USB drive,

Install #2 is a dual boot on what I consider the slowest laptop on the market, a $249 hp 2000 with an AMD A300 1.3 Ghz CPU.

The laptop is now fast enough to be useful. but not super fast.

I have been running the 2 computers side by side for about a month.

At first, I was very impressed with the USB system speed, etc.

However, as time went by, it got slower and slower. Rebooting helped, but it never got back to the original performance.

What makes it more interesting is that the PC is Ethernet and the laptop is connected via WIFI.

Yesterday, I updated both Lubuntu's and with a 2 minute head start, the laptop finished ahead of the PC!

Moral of my story, use USB to get the feel, and then go for a dual install.

The speed of the CPU is not so important in this matter as the data transfer rate of the storage medium. I guess the data transfer rate of the hard disk, although old, is faster than the data transfer rate of the USB port. Especially if it is USB 2 speeds and not USB 3.
