I'm sure everyone has their favorite one, here's mine: http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/photo20151121191754.jpg (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/photo20151121191754.php)

It's an Microsoft optical trackball I've owned since 2006. Still works like the day I bought it, except the Microsoft logo has worn off finally. ;) Kind of nice that Xubuntu uses all 5 buttons even if you can't program what they do like in Windows.

So what's yours?

My finger? :D

Seriously? A $4 mouse, which I try and avoid by the excessive extensive use of shortcut keys.

I use a Logitech MX Revolution which I bought with a keyboard 4 years ago.

It looks like this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Logitech_MX_Revolution_a.png

Mine's a simple USB store-brand-name mouse with two buttons and a clickable scroll wheel. There was a time, many years ago, when I preferred a keyboard and thought a mouse was a gimmick.

I use a Logitech G302 Daedalus Prime "Gaming Mouse" that I got for Christmas last year.

For a very long time a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse v2.0 (http://static.scan.co.uk/images/products/2069419-b.jpg), but lately a Turtle Beach Grip 300 gaming mouse (http://www.turtlebeach.com/product-detail/-/turtle-beach-grip-300-optical-gaming-mouse/630) which happens to be "driveless", there's no need for special drivers or 3rd party setup programs to fully utilise it. It's a basic gaming mouse that doesn't offer you programmable buttons or the ability to create custom configurations, but only allows you to adjust the DPI and polling rate, of which even the latter seems to work fine. For example, if I increase it to 500Hz, the mouse cursor feels more responsive, the downside is that the extra work the CPU needs to do manifests (in Ubuntu/Linux) as an additional ~10% CPU usage for X (when the cursor is moved.)

It feels a bit heavier than my previous mouse and definitely takes some getting used to.

That is all.

Front sight focus. On my mom's nice light weight revolver.

Which reminds me, I got in trouble in computer class for my answer to the question, What was the original point-and-click interface? with "Colt firearms."

Very un-PC there Jamie:lolflag:. For me, trackballs for desktops, trackpoints/'eraserheads' for laptops. I have a Logitech trackball right now, wouldn't mind a Kensington Expert Mouse trackball. Those scroll rings are nicer (faster and more accurate) than the typical scroll wheel IMO.

Logitech wireless mice in general. I especially love the unifying receiver they have.

Have you had a problem with trying to re-pair devices with the unifying receiver? I had to install the Windows unifying software when I swapped some keyboards and pointing devices around. Once properly paired they worked as expected with Ubuntu. There is now linux software that should serve the same pairing function.

Mice, like printers, are Evil.

I've become a bit obsessive about finding the Perfect Mouse for me. Still haven't, of course.

Quality control is often lax: Two copies of the same model can have a different feel to them. I just bought a Logitech M510 to replace an aging M510. The new one is lighter, click-ier, and the wheel is scratchy and less precise. I'll guess Logitech gave the manufacturing contract to someone else.

Microsoft's mice are well done, although I'm not fond of the design of their wireless mice with the blue Windows buttons. (There's a 'Back' button but no 'Forward' button.)

Like many here, I prefer Logitech mice in general..

I have an M185 I keep as a backup. But my day to day 'pointing device' is a Logitech Zone Touch T400 (http://www.technoshack.co.uk/computer-mouse/wireless-mouse/Logitech-Zone-Touch-Mouse-T400-Blue?gclid=Cj0KEQiAj8uyBRDawI3XhYqOy4gBEiQAl8BJbet LeJT4X0IUbwOl84ER1hbbXgyzAEMYVjI7w9gid-8aApZp8P8HAQ). It's a nice, well-built mouse, sturdily made.....and quite heavy (which I prefer instead of lightweight ones.)

It's a blend of traditional meets modern; standard two buttons, but instead of a scrollwheel, it has a 'mini-touchpad'.....which supports 'sideways' scrolling as well. It also incorporates two 'buttons'; one at the front, and one at the rear. Both of which are programmable.

It's the only mouse I've ever come across which fits my hand just.....nice. And, as Kpenguin says, the 'unifying' feature, where you can pair several devices to a single dongle, is very neat.

Next on my list is a Logitech wireless keyboard, to pair to the same dongle I use for my mouse. The only snag here is, I need to go into Windows to be able to 'pair' it. Unfortunately, you can't do that in Linux; but once the 'pairing' is done, it persists ever after.....no matter where you use it.

Regards,

Mike. ;)

Actually, as I read the article I noticed it was only for releases up to 13.10, 'Saucy Salamander'. Doesn't say anywhere in the article that it will work for versions later than this.....and a red warning banner at the top of the page does acknowledge that the article is well over a year old, and may, therefore, be out of date!

Clicking the Launchpad/GitHub link shows that the packages were all compiled between 2-3 years ago.....and the most recent activity was a Spanish translation from nearly a year back. Doesn't look promising for anybody who is using anything other than 12.04 LTS.

Regards,

Mike. ;)

An Apple Magic TrackPad, when hooked up to a mac. I have not been able to use it on a Linux box yet. It's so functional and intuitive it makes you not want to even see a mouse or trackball again.

You could try this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2006442&p=12462257&viewfull=1#post12462257) and this (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Multitouch/AppleMagicTrackpad) for starters. Might give some clues. Older threads and nothing about the Trackpad 2 but I didn't dig much. If you have no luck, perhaps start a thread if you haven't already and someone might already have one working. :)

I used this one in Ubuntu-MATE 15.04 with no problems: http://www.webupd8.org/2013/07/pair-unpair-logitech-unifying-devices.html

I know it says 14.04, but it did run & work. Even worked when I upgraded to 15.10. Using my logitech M570 trackball on my Acre Aspire One net-book.

:lolflag: Slightly off-topic, but I this reminds me of an exam question many years go, "How is the Auckland City Council financed?" - my answer: "with money."

That would still be true, lisati - only it needs a LOT more these days..... :-\"

I've used a Logitech trackball for about 15 years. (If not even longer) I used to video weddings and a trackball was much easier to use whilst scrolling in the timeline of my NLE

I just built an entire new system so I've just replaced everything apart from the keyboard. It's a "Natural" keyboard made by Microsoft that is even older than the trackball ! I hate to admit it but Microsoft makes an excellent Keyboard !

Here's a pic showing the trackball with my new monitor (just before I built the new system) and I'll go looking for an ancient pic showing the same keyboard and Trackball

Link coz it's likely to be a huge picture

lol ..The Mug says it all

I'm 54 now so go back 14 years and this was 2001

[Edit]

Just found an even older pic. The computer you can see in this is an Amiga A1200 in an Eyetech full tower. It shares that tower with an Asus CUB4X P3 siamesed together via serial & scsi (2 computers in one tower). The Video camera is a Panasonic Ms4 and the monitor is a Belinea 21" (Monster)
This must've been "Mid-Nineties" - You can see the same keyboard & trackball

i disagree.

the topic clearly states.

"What's your favorite pointing device?"

says nothing about the type of pointing device.

No but actually this Logitech G500 is my favorite. It is simple enough
yet has enough extra little features on it to satisfy my recreational
gaming needs.

Been using a Logitech M570 for years. My wife even went out an bought one since she prefers it over a standard mouse:
