View Full Version : [ubuntu] "No Bootable Devices" on boot without USB DVD drive plugged in

Hello,

I tried to install ubuntu on my older laptop. Everything seemed to have worked at first as it booted fine the first time. The next time I tried to boot it without my USB DVD drive I received "no bootable devices" at boot. I have installed multiple times with both custom and default formatting and I still ran into the same issue.

It doesn't render my computer unusable but it's definitely annoying having to bring my drive everywhere.

Of note:
The DVD drive can be empty and the computer still boots.
Acer Aspire 5810T with 64bit install (tried both 15.10 and 14.04).
The boot program does not seem to recognize any USB installation sticks I've tried.

Thanks for the help.

It will help us if you run the boot-info script from Boot-Repair in my signature below, and show us the pastebin link that you get from that.

I suspect that grub was not installed into the hard drive of your machine or you still have the boot priority wrongly set.

=================== Suggested repair
The default repair of the Boot-Repair utility would purge (in order to enable-lvm) and reinstall the grub2 of mapper/ubuntu--vg-root into the MBR of sda, using the following options: sda1/boot,
Additional repair would be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s

=================== User settings
The settings chosen by the user will not act on the boot.

Unhide GRUB boot menu in mapper/ubuntu--vg-root/boot/grub/grub.cfg

Boot successfully repaired.

You can now reboot your computer.

Sorry for the large posts but it wouldn't let me attach the text files. The top one is the boot-info before repair and the lower one is the boot-info after boot repair. I still have the same issue.

Thanks

You can use code tags or the # icon in the forum's advanced editor.
Or just attach the links to the pastebin that Boot-Repair provides.

Did repair let you boot?

I still have to have my DVD drive attached to boot.

You are not getting grub installed to sda, do not install to a partition like sda1.

Run Boot-Repair's advanced mode and do the full uninstall/reinstall of grub. Make sure your LVM is mounted and /boot option ticked so they are included.

Still doesn't work. Maybe I misinterpreted - by uninstall you meant purge right? And I ticked all options in the install step.

I'm pretty sure GRUB is installed as it still opens when my cd drive is connected. Just to be clear it isn't LiveCD that opens when it is connected.

It says grub is installed with no error.

Are you perhaps booting thru grub, but have another issue. Grub menu will not normally show if only one system, not dual boot.
Hold shift key from BIOS until grub menu appears. If that works, you may need a boot parameter for your Intel video.

Do not use nomodeset, but use one of the Intel boot parameters. But add it like the examples shown on nomodeset.
At grub menu you can use e for edit, scroll to linux line and replace quiet splash with nomodeset.
How to set NOMODESET and other kernel boot options in grub2 - both BIOS liveCD & grub first boot ( also UEFI with grub)
