Desktop ubuntu installation from USB onto HDD?

Hello,
I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm trying to install it on my new laptop.
The problem is that I can't seem to find a guide for the exact type of installation I need.
I want to:

use a USB-stick to install because I can't burn CDs/DVDs
have the installation be non-live (desktop), everything I change should stay that way
the actual installation shouldn't occur on the stick but the laptop's HDD


All the other tutorials I found would go for live installations or installations on the USB itself.

0. Decide what versions and flavours of Ubuntu you want to test

1. Copy/clone/flash an Ubuntu iso file(s) into a USB stick

2. Boot 'a live session' from the USB stick and 'try Ubuntu'

3. Start the installer from the live session and install Ubuntu into the internal HDD

The computer hardware makes a difference - if you tell us about it, we have a better chance to give good advice. Se please specify your computer

- Brand name and model
- CPU
- RAM (size)
- graphics chip/card
- wifi chip/card

Do you want to install Ubuntu only, or alongside Windows?
