The kernel update that was issued today -- 3.13.0-66 -- killed my computer. Fortunately I was able to go back to the prior one -- 3.13.0-65. When restarting after the install and just after logging in, a system error box came up, but all I could do was a hard shutdown.
Addendum: Looks like this bug has been reported. There are 30 of us who reported having this problem at launchpad.
