Check out the Nokia 770 (http://europe.nokia.com/770) (not a phone), it's "not" a pda per se, as it's marketed as an "internet tablet".
It runs a modified version of debian, and has a great community behind it. Many useful applications have been ported to it, too. There is a native Google Talk client bundled with the 2006 OS and Gizmo client available for download. We've been lucky that Nokia has been really dedicated to making this device great.

Additionally, most reviews of the 770 are not valid anymore because Nokia has addressed and fixed many of the issues people have had with the 2005 OS in the 2006 OS release and they've added additional functionality. If you look for reviews online, make sure they've reviewed it based on the 2006 OS.

The Zaurus will run OpenZaurus which is Debian based. It run Linux with the Qtopia desktop as standard.

I would love to get one of those, but have you seen the prices?
Visit the HP Page and find out... :-(
The Nokia 770 is just as expensive.

Not exactly a PDA. But look at the spec, the potential is enormous.

It looks lovely, but is aimed more at a gamer.

I'm an e-book person and really need something that can read .pdf, .pdb, .txt and .doc. My Palm did all this until I dropped it and reduced it to bite-sized-pieces...

Of course, (not having the gift of precognition), I had just bought a new cell-phone a week before I destroyed my Palm.

Had I known, I would have bought a Palm PDA/phone combo, but now I'm poverty-striken.

Ah well, at least I have my shiny new Nokia.:-({|=

The Nokia 770 is $359USD online, and according to google that's $471AUD, so it's a bit above your limit.

Visit the HP Page and find out.

You could have Googled "HP IPAQ" and it would have taken you right there...

Nevertheless, the Ipaq is $US 299.99.
There is more than one make: http://www.hp.com/country/us/en/prodserv/handheld.html

well you could always go for a sony psp and install linux, a ubuntu pda will be out of the question due to min specs, sharp Zaurus seem to be well liked as they come preinstalled running linux.
Its a shame that Gizmondo didn't catch on as it was a good spec but yeah linux can be installed on a psp not sure what the performance is like or if it supports keyboards.
