For last three days the "Software Updater" utility is just showing a blank screen. I have it set to show security updates daily. It has the "Software Updater" title on the top bar and will show the resize/close buttons when the cursor hovers over them. I just ran Synaptic and did a full update, after closing Synaptic I ran the Software Updater again but the problem persisted. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with the standard Unity DE.
I did a quick search and found someone else with this problem but no solution was found. There is also a tiny screenshot.

I hope someone can help you. Software Updater seems to work for me on Lubuntu 14.04 LTS fully updated. I think both Ubuntu and Lubuntu use the same Software Updater. I don't normally use the Software Updater and used it just now with its "default" settings.

By the way, that site seems to be a bit dodgy in that it's "cloning" stuff from Ask Ubuntu. And the question in question has been removed from Ask Ubuntu "for reasons of moderation (http://askubuntu.com/questions/506983/software-updater-broken)"!

That happened to me a while ago, but I was too busy to track it down so I just used The Great Debian Update Tweak: Synaptic Reload > Mark All Upgrades > Apply. After a lot of times doing that, the Software Updater miraculously started working again. This happened on 14.04 with kernel 3.13.0 as well as 3.16.0 - two different systems. Sorry to be no help, but thought I'd let you know you weren't the only one! ;-)

Sorry about the delay in replying but I've been working away from home for a week. Switching on my laptop today and it seems to have mended itself. A bit of a mystery :)
