I have a blank hdd, a windows 8 install usb, and a ubuntu gnome install usb. What are the best logical steps to go about setting up a full dual boot environment.

It is a 1TB drive

Is system UEFI or BIOS?

Generally better to install Windows first.
If hardware is UEFI, then you can install in either mode, but really must install both in same boot mode.
UEFI install, windows 8 with Something Else screen shots

But I suggest using Windows to shrink Windows if installing on same drive and reboot Windows first.
But do not create any partitions with Windows disk tools.

Something Else install, but prefer larger / of 20 or 25GB. Not showing Windows
