It's a scary thought, but we will eventually come to it, a time where almost all jobs are taken over by AI or artificial intelligence, whether we like it or not, and if almost all jobs are taken over by AIs, that means, little to no work, little to no money, in a society that is entirely almost automated, the need to make money becomes moot, money becomes obsolete and not a driving force in people's lives, the phrase, 'if you don't work, you don't eat' becomes a thing of the past, so automation eliminates money, so it also eliminates hunger, want and greed.

Some humans will still have jobs, technicians, engineers, programmers, developers will still be needed to design, create and repair AIs, and AIs lack the emotional amplitude to completely replace doctors, psychologists, counselors, explorers (all fields), scientists (all fields), entertainers (all fields), priests (all religions), however, in a society that is entirely almost automated, these people working in these professions will not get paid, at least, not in the traditional sense, as Captain Picard once said;

"The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves and the rest of Humanity."

A great example of future workers is the Linux development community, all over the world, there are thousands of people writing codes, developing software, reviewing and patching security holes for the Linux kernel, which is the lifeblood of the many Linux distros, and out of these thousands of people helping to build the Linux kernel, almost none of these people are getting paid for their work, why, because they don't ask for it, they develop Linux because they have a passion for Linux and want to see it thrive well into the future, Linux for them is a labor of love, and this will be the mindset of people in the future, they will see Humanity as a labor of love, and not a labor of corporate greed, they will work to better themselves and the rest of Humanity.

I think the video is thought-provoking if you weren't paying attention in school.

The video asks "what will we do when so many people are unemployable?"
I think that question is framed quite wrongly. It ignores much past experience in many industries with automation, it glosses over problems unique to each industry, it seems to assume people are inflexible and rather dim, and it ignores the existing institutions with experience handling precisely such changes.

We have seem massive change (and migration) before...within many of our lifetimes. Massive change is not unusual to most of us.

The basic questions about the amount and nature of work that each person should contribute to a society, and the responsibilities of that society to each member, have been hashed over by philosophers, economists, politicians, and writers for millenia. It's always been a moving target.

Futurists in the 1960's predicted a society with abundance of leisure and free time when machines replace human labour. Instead we find humans competing with machines for 'jobs'; technology is feared because it is taking away our balls and chains and liberating us as intended. Why the paradox?

'Employment' means using a tool to do something. So it is somehow taken for granted that humans are just tools. If a tool becomes obsolete, then of course you just discard it without sentimentality and fuss.

The problem is not with technology per se. If there is no need for human labour, then why do humans still need "jobs", why can't a supposedly super efficient and affluent society provide basic income to all like it was implied in the optimistic futurists' predictions? I won't go further as it will get the thread locked. Suffice to say that it has something to do with numbers, like 1% vs 99%.

the world is about balance, it's already way out of balance, there's to many people.
to correct this bad things are going to happen, economic collapse is at the top of my list.
it's not going to take much to start the reaction, everything is so tied together that any interruption in food flow will cause disaster. could be fuel shortage, loss of electricity, bad weather.

people are people & some will do anything to survive. it's not machines we need to worry about, for them to thrive there needs to be a working society.
as people we destroy more than we create, it's just easier & making things easy is what we do best.

Unfortunately, it isn't going to change. I won't elaborate either, for fear of having the OP's thread being locked.

When I learned that, ~ 35 years ago, it was a "bummer". All the ideologies I subscribed to were, "blown out of the water".

On the other side of it, came an understanding that, I need only be responsible for, my actions/reactions. The rest I have no control over.

That's why, I didn't watch the video.

Reality. Google has made it clear that they are aggressively pursuing A I specialists. Artificial Intelligence.
Like the self driving cars. Or trucks, or buses.
Trying to squeeze some people into "higher education" simply, will not work.
In truth, we are entering an era we could call "the Great Divide".
We, the users of these forums know full well, that we will not be affected.
And, i don't think that we are a smug self satisfied bunch, rather we, as a group, tend to be technically aware.
Ubuntu users and Linux advocates tend to be free thinkers, and often innovators.
............. maybe that’s' why Mycroft was funded !!!!!

As an unemployed person I would challenge an automation engineer to create a robot to replace my job.

One of two things will happen.

1) The economy will be destroyed. All of these companies will make all of their products and perform their services with robots and autos. But nobody will be making any money to pay them for their services, or to buy their products. It's unsustainable.

2) The world will end up like the spaceship on WALL-E. It will just be one giant communism where all of the profits are shared with everyone in the world, and we will just all be served by the robots to the point that we all end up being fat slobs that can't even walk because our leg muscles are atrophic from lack of use.

Let's hope for #2. :D

Humans being replaced by AI assumes that all tech works perfectly. I find that thoroughly laughable. We can't manage to deprecate all those Java 6 applications out there. Ffs we haven't even mastered the universal remote. The thought that we could somehow advance to the point that computers could take over... LOL

shucks, i was really looking forward to that sept 23 collapse, well didn't happen, oct 1st, came & went, gov is still going. arrr :(
on the plus side, my bug out bag is at the ready so bring it on. :) i'm so ready for a reset of society.

unless the ai's can work out the energy issues, there always going to be no concern to me. cut the power, kill the ai's, simple as that.
