I've been happily running Ubuntu 10.10 for a few years to do various local tasks (and using another OS to surf the web), and now wish to upgrade.

But if I understand the system requirements correctly, I can't upgrade to the current version without purchasing a new laptop. I have a Dell Latitude D500,Pentium M 1.30 GBZ, 30 GB HD, 600 MHZ, 512 GB RAM.

What version can I upgrade to without purchasing new hardware?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi, welcome to the fora.
Lubuntu is an option. What matters is not the operative system but the applications you choose.

If you encounter PAE problems this might help:

Welcome. If you could get it up to 1Gb of RAM that might be all you need for a relatively painless experience. Lubuntu or possibly Xubuntu would run on that.

I would consider a minimal install (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD) and add a lightweight desktop and only the apps you use, nothing else. Good luck.

Thank you for the advice and links. I would like to keep Open Office, and don't have a good web connection for downloading stuff. Will probably buy a USB installer if I can find one.

So, without switching to Lubuntu, is there an Ubuntu XX.XX version that my hardware will support, above 10.10?

Thanks,
Dave

You won't have any support for versions other than 12.04LTS, 14.04LTS, or the current 15.04 and 15.10 versions. See this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

You should really consider adding more memory. A second 512KB stick for you machine costs $10-20 (http://www.memorystock.com/orderitem.asp?it=552ms-156&MnfId=&MdlId=35816) and would make a big difference. A 1 GB stick is about the same price (http://www.memorystock.com/orderitem.asp?it=637ms-LH&MnfId=&MdlId=35816). I'd invest the $40 and upgrade to 2 GB if that doesn't bust your wallet.
