Thank you Australia for kangaroos, Koala bears, and all of those other unique species that evolved on your isolated continent,I'm having a real hard time restraining myself from linking to images of Taipans, Sydney funnel webs, redbacks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjDAiq2-xeU), estuarine crocs etc etc etc.

I love how others see this place, always good for a laugh; quite a few critters here are not so "cute" ... especially the local "yetis".

But I thank you the *most* for AC/DC
Ah yes! ACCA-DACCA ! Living rock legends still going strong 40 years from the first time I saw them playing "Jailbreak" on the ABC television show "Countdown" back in 1975 (I think, mid '70s anyhow ;))

Thanks for the post, it brought back 40 year old memories; I must say from AC/DC's early years ... "RIP., Bon Scott (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bon_Scott)"

Redbacks? Pah, I could go out the back and find a dozen or so of them right now. Unless I try to pat one, I should be safe, and they are rarely fatal anyhow unless you're a baby, child or small animal. :)

Yes, we have some dangerous critters and creatures, but you generally have to go looking for them. A kangaroo ain't gonna eat you while you sleep in your tent on a camping trip. Nothing here is. You may get bitten by something not nice if you leave your tent flaps open! (My mother always warned me never to leave my tent flaps open).

It does depend on where you live, but the most dangerous thing generally is hitting random creatures when you're driving at 110kms an hour in the country. More dangerous than that is trying to avoid them and hitting a tree in your efforts and killing yourself (not uncommon and a friend of mine did exactly this about thirty years ago coming back from a surfing trip).

To music: little secret, my wife used to go out with old Aussie rock stager Rob Riley who played with Rose Tattoo and penned the classic 'We Won't be Beaten', among others ...

AC/DC, a hard rocking Aussie musical icon, but while Angus smokes like a train, he hasn't had an alcoholic drink in decades. Some folk are quite surprised at that fact. Unsure about a highway to hell, but perhaps a highway to lung cancer, which might equate to the same. :D

PS: AC/DC lost some of their magic for me when Bon went to sing with the choir of rockers in the sky or the middle of the earth.

PPS: Still rip out Midnight Oil on the odd occasion. Great summer music. Check them out if you haven't already. Not AC/DC but can rock.

Bunyip.

Unfortunately, I'm yet to see one! It's the drop-bears you need to look out for. That's what tourists normally get as an introduction to the bush. Drop-bears get out of it on eucalyptus leaves and drop out of trees onto your head at night and attack. 99.9% of people fall for it.

(Loosely based on an exaggeration of the behaviour of koalas who generally sleep, or are sleepy, all day and get active and eat eucalyptus leaves at night ... but they don't fall out of trees, although they have been known to get quite vicious.)

I looked up redbacks on Wikipedia - yep, look very similar to the black widow spiders here in the U.S. and says they are biologically related.

When I'm in my truck I have a policy that I will *not* try to avoid any creature on the road - be it a deer, etc... I use to work for the State Road, and a Tracter Trailer (18 wheeler) driver completely totalled his truck trying to avoid a deer. I say drive over any animal in your way. Now, it's a much different story when I'm on my Yamaha XT225 - even dogs are dangerous to hit on a motorcycle.

That's such a kewl story about your wife and her dating Rob Riley!

About AC/DC again. I read that the first lead singer of AC/DC died from MISADVENTURE - so someone tell me what adventure did he die from? You rarely read of somoeone dying from that! LOL, most die of disease, drug over dose, car wreck, or other things. LOL

Choir of rockers in sky or middle of earth? Is that the one that died of misadventure ?

Cheers my Aussie friends!

FYI, Wikipedia on death of "Bon" Scott

On 15 February 1980 Scott attended a session where Malcolm and Angus Young were working on the beginnings of two songs that would later be recorded on the Back in Black (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_in_Black) album; "Have a Drink On Me" and "Let Me Put My Love Into You" with Scott accompanying on drums rather than singing or writing lyrics.[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bon_Scott#cite_note-hell_aint-1) On 19 February 1980, Scott, 33, passed out after a night of heavy drinking in a London club called the Music Machine (currently known as the KOKO). He was left to sleep in a Renault 5 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_5) owned by an acquaintance named Alistair Kinnear, at 67 Overhill Road in East Dulwich (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Dulwich), South London.[18] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bon_Scott#cite_note-18) The following afternoon, Kinnear found Scott lifeless, and alerted the authorities. Scott was rushed to King's College Hospital (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King%27s_College_Hospital) in Camberwell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camberwell), where he was pronounced dead on arrival (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_on_arrival). It has been contended that pulmonary aspiration (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulmonary_aspiration) of vomit was the cause of Scott's death,[19] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bon_Scott#cite_note-BScottDeath2-19) but the official cause was listed on the death certificate as "acute alcohol poisoning (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_poisoning)" and classified as "death by misadventure (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquests_in_England_and_Wales#Verdict)".[20] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bon_Scott#cite_note-BScottDeath-20)[21] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bon_Scott#cite_note-21) As part of the funeral arrangements, Scott's body was embalmed by Desmond Henley (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desmond_Henley);[22] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bon_Scott#cite_note-christopherhenley-22) it was later cremated and Scott's ashes were interred by his family at Fremantle Cemetery (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fremantle_Cemetery) in Fremantle, Western Australia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fremantle,_Western_Australia).[23] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bon_Scott#cite_note-bonshighway-23)

Death by misadventureFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A death (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death) by misadventure, as recorded by coroners (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coroner) and on death certificates (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_certificate) and associated documents, is one that is primarily attributed to an accident which occurred due to a dangerous risk which was taken voluntarily. In contrast, when a cause of death (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cause_of_death) is listed as an accident (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accident) rather than a misadventure, this implies no unreasonable willful risk.[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_by_misadventure#cite_note-1) Misadventure is not a scientifically recognized cause of death (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cause_of_death); there is always a more direct cause although it may be unknown in certain cases. Misadventure is a form of unnatural death (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unnatural_death) like accident (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accident), suicide (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide), or homicide (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homicide).

Men at Work were taken to court for copyright over the song Down Under. It made and broke the band. They made a huge amount of money from that hit and lost it again when they lost the court case and were ordered to pay up. There is an old Australian ditty: Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree. It was claimed the flute part was stolen from the melody of that.

One of the members committed suicide, many say due to the stress of the whole thing and the loss of a fortune, the singer Colin Hay tours Australia a bit with his wife who bangs a drum and interpretive dances, and the rest of the band have drifted into obscurity. Sad.

Have a look for 'Who can it be' now. Also another good MAW number. Colin Hay, great voice.

I always thought that is an old folk song (I learned it in grade 6 only remember: laugh kookabura laugh..) Don't really know the band.
But I like Tom Waits' "Tom Trauber's blues" I think that has something to do with Australia. Saddest song ever. :)

I love that Men at Work song - it's been so long since I heard that song or seen video.

I seem to recall he had a funky eye - am I right?

It has a few times with singers from all countries that they were sued for copying song rhythms and melodies - remember "Ice Ice baby" sounded just like a Queen song!

But that Kookaburra song is awesome - I posted it on my FB wall (timeline) at:
https://www.facebook.com/michaelpiziak

but this link (above) did not have the flute in it (or did it) ?

Me, too. They were huge here, too. When they got big from 'Down Under' they were smart. MAW bought a big hotel right here in my city about 10 minutes drive from where I live, as an investment for the whole band. The 'Hotel Adelaide' in North Adelaide, a prime piece of real estate. When they got sued for copyright and lost they had to sell the hotel.

Now that I as an American have saluted Australia,

I now remind you of one of the greatest American performers of funk/jive/kinky music !

He is dead now,

But this man could sing, he could play the electric guitar, he could play the keyboard, he could play the drums,

And at 0:52 in this video he drops the microphone, when he usually says "when i came home last night"

but he simply made it look like he dropped the microphone behind his back and caught it in mid-air,

You will know him by his most famous song, which is great, and it is "Super-Freak!"

It's the African-American named Rick James,

often it is "I am Rick James B!tch!"

so sad he died at the young age of 56,

but check out this live performance, and again at 0:52 he drops the mic but makes it look like he meant to

and he plays the keyboards in this live performance and at the end he plays the drums (and again, he can play the electric guitar too) - such a talented man!

Here it is,

Click this live performance in Germany [the European crowds just don't go crazy like the American crowds, the South American crowds, or the Australian crowds] - but that is their nature. With that said, I have never seen anyone else get a German crowd get cranked up this much, like this, like he did here!

Well, the British and South American crowds at a concert can also riot like Americans and Australians, so I think it may be an English speaking/western English crowd thing that know how to raise hell at a concert!
LOL

Here it is,

Me too! I love the quote on the can "Fosters, Australian for beer", then you look on the side of the can "Made In Canada"! :D

Incidentally, virtually NO-ONE drinks Fosters here. The majority is made (yes, mostly overseas) for the export market. It's rubbish. That's why we send it overseas! ;)

I was in England and people seemed to think it was nectar of the gods. Many didn't believe me when I told them Australians generally don't go near the stuff. It's all media spin. 'Fosters' is anything but 'Australian for beer'. Far from it. Australian for 'crap beer' is probably more like it. :)

PS: It might be hard, but if you can get your hands on a Cooper's beer ...

Interesting enough, years ago, we use to get the actual imported from australia Fosters but what we have now is actually brewed right here in the states... In TEXAS as a matter of fact...I think it is supposed to have a somewhat greater alcoholic content then most other beers which is probably why i like it ;)

Actually, though, my local favorite here is Coors and Samuel Adam's Boston Lager is pretty darn good too...didn't know Fosters wasn't really popular down under...

Bucky Ball
September 12th, 2015, 07:14 AM
Yea, 4.9 per cent, or thereabouts, is pretty standard here. A lot of American beers would be classed here as mid-strength or light.

Anyway, back on topic, thank you Australia for ... Coopers beer (http://www.coopers.com.au/)! :)

PS: I don't drink anymore and don't have shares in the company so without bias.
