Hi guys! I'm a newbie here and wanted to know more about ubuntu. I have heard about ubuntu before and mostly used ubuntu on web servers, however, just last year, a friend of mine ditched his windows 8 pc to go to a Linux based desktop OS (forgot what it is) and based on his experience, it's really good.

My question now is, would licensing be a problem with Ubuntu? or any other Linux OS?
Can I create an office environment with Ubuntu? like Windows Domain > Ubuntu Domain, Windows Server > Ubuntu Server.
Thanks for any help in advance, as I mentioned, I'm a newbie here and I would appreciate any guidance.

What licensing problems are you thinking about?

The expression "office environment" is also not specific. The answer, of course, is Yes. But that is not very helpful to you. Is it? We can do a lot with Ubuntu and most of what Ubuntu can do is outside my experience. In fact I do not understand most of the labels being used in this publicity page.

http://insights.ubuntu.com/

The Ubuntu web site lists these areas that Ubuntu is useful in:

Cloud
Server
Desktop
Phone
Tablet
Internet of Things
Management.

It is, as I said, publicity and some of those areas are under intense development.

The main problem you're going to run into is that the Windows features (e.g., Domains and Servers) are configured and administered by folks trained and licensed in Windows Server Administration. You're talking about using features like Active Directory and LDAP. If you're familiar with these, a quick search can find Linux "equivalents" in areas such as Apache Server. But, if you're not familiar, then you're approaching something that is extremely complex and VERY hard to do.

Thanks for the replies guys!
Yes, I know the complexity of what I want to do, but I'm in for it.
