Boot full, unmet dependencies when attempting to delete package

I can't update system or install anything trought Ubuntu Software Center. The upper toolbar has the red "dont drive" symbol and when I click it it says


An error occured, please run Package Manager or apt-get in a terminal. The error message was 'Error: BrokenCount >0'. This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies.

Tried googling how to remove old kernels and tried different commands but everytime ran into "unmet dependencies".

I tried to remove the oldest kernel first.

If apt-get can't do it, I would remove with dpkg. I have seen forum post on this with other options.

Let's see what we can do !
As you are aware the main problem here is :


(No space left on device)


Which is the 1st order of priority. Get some operating head room.
Let's see if the package manager can work to remove the old kernels:


sudo apt-get autoremove

Else we sic dpkg on the situation, see if dpkg at the lower level can work.

If you do go with dpkg, it should only be necessary to remove a couple of kernels from /boot and apt-get should start working again.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Sudo apt-get autoremove didn't work (should have mentioned this in the first post, sorry) but dpkg did the trick. I succeed to delete them one by one (except the kernel in use and 1 before it just in case) and then succesfully ran update and also succeed installing a program trought Software Center. Also the red "no drive" sign is gone. The main problem is solved but just out of curiosity:

1. Is there a way to prevent this from happening again?

2. This was printed many times on the terminal, what does it mean: "Warning: Setting GRUB_TIMEOUT to a non-zero value when GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT is set is no longer supported."

The system will not second guess you:


1. Is there a way to prevent this from happening again?

As to if/when/need/want to use an older kernel. The system leaves it to your discretion how to handle old kernels.

There is a minor edit one can do to the effected file to make things all better :
