I notice a new variation of 14.04 has been released. If I continue to upgrade the software via sofware update will that avoid the need to download 14.04.3 and install it?

Yes it will.

14.04.3 is useful for new installs as it consists of the original release along with the updated packages released since then. By updating with software updater you are already there.
