Hi all,

I've given this my best shot with my limited Ubuntu know-how.. and I'm pretty sure I'm close, but need a little help..

I'm adding 2x sata 4TB Western Digital Red drives to my Ubuntu server.

I formatted them using a desktop Ubuntu machine to ext4 using GParted and a USB adaptor. I've just installed them into my server, and edited fstab.

I've already pre-loaded files to them, so would rather not have to reformat again now they are installed... but if it comes to it, then so be it.

I think there is an issue with partition tables, either I've told fstab the wrong type of table, or I've formatted them with the wrong type of table, I used GPT based on the advice of a website I read for guidance when formatting.

The two new drives appear as dev/sdc and dev/sdd. I'd have expected them to be sdc1 and sdd1, but the 1's are missing.

fdisk -l returns this result:

My fstab looks like this, I'm trying to mount one drive in /media/family, and the other in /media/media. I just copied the formatting of the line above for sdb1 as that drive works, I dont know what defaults and 0 or 2 mean.

sda .... sdz are disks.
sda1.....99 are partitions.

GPT is applied to the "disk". Then partitions are created. parted or gparted are used for this part.

mkfs is applied to the "partition." gparted can do this, if you elect NOT to use LVM. On a server, using LVM is much, much, much more flexible. LVM has pv, vg, and lv parts. LVs relate to "partitions".

So - that error make me think you didn't create the file system on sdX1 .... Did you?

Remember, that Linux/Unix will let an administrator do whatever they say, even if it is wrong. Could it be that you put the file system onto the disk without the partitioning?

Also - mounting things under /media is a really bad idea. That is where the OS puts things that are automatically mounted. For mounts that you cause, it is smarter to put those **anywhere** except /media.

These lines all look wrong to me.

Can't fix sdc or sdd - but perhaps you should use UUIDs - device names like sda, sdb, sdc .... change from time to time. That is why we use UUIDs and LABELs these days inside our fstabs.


/dev/sdb1 /media/storage ext4 defaults 0 2
Notice how I removed the trailing slash. I would also create the mount point (that is just an empty directory) somewhere outside /media.

Use the sudo blkid command to get the UUID for each partition/device. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingUUID has more details.

You shouldn't use fdisk on partitions larger then 2TB (see the warnings in red). The proper tool is parted from the CLI or gparted with the GUI. None the less the partitions you formatted are there in blue.

You should follow the advice above (in red) and use the UUID to mount sdb1, sdc1 and sdd1. This means you need to find what the are the UUID's Post the output of this command from the CLI so we can advise you specifically
sudo blkid -c /dev/null -o list
The proper format for the fstab file should be
UUID=<some long number> <mountpoint> <file system type> <dump?> <fsck?>

All of the fields used in the fstab are explained in the man pages
man fstab
The number two means that this is a partition that should be checked with fsck after the root file system is checked.

I can see the logic in using the UUID instead of sdxx for mounting, as I guess the UUID is the physical drive serial number, or generated from it?

Also, now you mention it, I added a partition table when I formatted them, but forgot to add a partition... oops.. I didn't notice, as my desktop machine just treated it as a removable USB drive, and allowed me to add files. Root did claim ownership, which I had to adjust to me to allow the saving of files.

Is there an easy way to create a partition, and move my data into it? Or am I best to just start all over again?

Once sorted, I'll try mounting to my mnt directory instead of media, and also will use UUID's instead. I may also move the storage directory to mnt too (and use UUID), as I put that in media about a year ago. This is what I get for "just having a go" - but you've got to learn somehow!

A project for this weekend...

UUID is connected to partitions or LVs (logical volumes) too.

Remember when I said that Unix lets you do what you want, even when it is not normal? You've seen that. For disks in a RAID set, it is common not to bother with partitioning.

Root always gets ownership of new partitions, new file systems. That is normal.

I would start over. Also, since you are already using LVM, you might want to add these new disks to the existing VG. It really comes down to how you backup the new storage. I like to limit my partition sizes to whatever my backup storage can handle. With LVM, I only expand available storage when needed.

A little history of mount points:
* /media is used by the OS for automatic mounting of external storage
* /mnt is used by root for temporary storage - basically a place to connect partitions before they are ready for public use
* /export is used for NFS mounts in many organizations - /export/home is commonly used for HOMEs that are available across many different systems. Each userid has 1 HOME, but it is mounted on every system they have a login on.

You can mount new partitions/LVs anywhere, onto any directory. Why not take advantage of that? Of course, you can mount storage on directory structures that are full too - most people thing of this as a mistake because any files below that point cannot be accessed anymore, but it does work. I use /D/.... as a place to add extra static storage and /misc/... for automounted, on-demand, storage (like for media files).

You should do what makes sense for you. Don't worry about the way I do it or anyone else does it, provided you have a reason for doing it the way you decide and it doesn't conflict with other parts of the system.

Thanks for your kind words on the matter..

I'm intent on keeping these as two separate 4TB drives, one for family stuff (photo albums, etc..), the other for media (music / films etc,..) not raiding them togehter..

However, this does bring me to another point... I'll have a NAS box (2 bay of max 2TB each) which I intend to use to take nightly backups of the family drive. If I configure it in raid 0 to make 4TB, this will be adequate for my family drive backups using one of the utilities listed here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem - Do you have any advice on achieving this?

I have two reasons for wanting to use the NAS as a backup of the family stuff, rather than raid 1-ing the two new drives:

- I can keep it in a separate location to the server so that there's more chance of recovering data after a house fire / flood.
- I'd rather not have the NAS running all the time, to save power, and prolong the life of the drives... the NAS has as setting to go into standby mode a few minutes after the last use.

I'll get the drives out of the server tonight and re-format them. I'll make sure I can mount them properly first this time before filling them with data!

If I can mount them anywhere, I think I'll just place them (all three) in the root directory as /family, /media and /storage (renamed to cctv) reason being to just keep life simple. unless there is an issue with creating folders in the root directory?

You can't use /media. That is already taken and a "special directory" as discussed above.

Do not use RAID0. That is a fast way to lost all the data on both disks. RAID0 should be used only by people with extreme performance needs for temporary storage only. Think video editors. Most of those guys have switched to SSDs and run those in RAID0 to get even more performance for the file they are actively working on. For you and I with spinning disks, RAID0 is a bad idea. If 1 disk in the set fails - all the data is gone on both. Sweet! NOT!

Rather than RAID, LVM is a viable alternative to merge disks - just be certain that you can backup at the partition level. That is key.

Power needs for a NAS are minimal. Spinning down and up the disk will cause more wear and tear on the drives than anything else. Those RED drives are designed to spin 24/7/365 for 5+ yrs. Let them do that. Watch the temperatures so they don't over heat. The only drives that I allow to spin down are in a laptop. You can control spin down settings with hdparm.

Backups ... I've answered that question 20 times in these forums. Search a little. i find the suggestions on that linked page to be simplistic and next to useless. Sorry. I use rsync for media backups (as needed, usually weekly) and rdiff-backup for all others which happen nightly, automatically.

Of course there are other opinions about this stuff. I just know what works for me and that with 6 systems running 24/7 here the last 15 yrs, our power bill hasn't changed much. I have been actively retiring 125W systems for 45W systems the last few years and never had a 165W AMD monster. Down to 2 power sucking systems, but those run 10+ VMs each. Most of the time, they use less even with 6 disks and the connected external disk arrays.

Oh, sorry, thanks for pointing out about /media... I'll think of a batter name.

Here is my idea on the backups.. I find it much easier to share ideas like this using a diagram, saves ideas getting mixed up.

I'm only concerned with backing up the Family drive... media, and operating system can be replaced easily. CCTV footage of next doors cat is no great loss either.

Main reason to have the NAS drives in RAID 0 is to make it up to 4TB to match the family drive capacity.. The box is limited to 2x 2TB.

Interesting to learn that the drives fail quicker due to cycles, so I'd have more reliability if I didn't use power-saving on the NAS and kept the disks spinning.

Split the 4TB drive in half match your backup storage.

DO NOT USE RAID0.

There are many ways you can "merge" data on multiple partitions, when you get there. Or you can just use symlinks. The key is to have a way to backup your data and not get screwed over something foolish like RAID0.

- Family drive of server, and NAS volume in raid 1 together, if possible to raid over a network.

If a house fire takes out either the server or the NAS, our family photos are safe.

I've just formatted the family drive again, (last time I did actually create a partition on it, but reformatted it anyway). I formatted it on my desktop machine, and found out it's UUID.

I've now put it back in the server, edited fstab to use the UUID instead, and mount it to newly created directory /family:

Are you formatting the partition (the HDD) on one machine and then moving it to another machine? If so, are you sure it is connected to a known good port?

Sounds like the disk controller or USB ports aren't working with Ubuntu.
Check dmesg output to see is the controller is known.

sudo lshw -C storage will show which controllers are known and which drivers they are using, if any.

It doesn't look like you are formatting the partition correctly. I assume that you only have one of the HDD's in question attached at this point. Also that this is the server we are looking at.

The system sees the partition. It just doesn't like what you have done.

Hi BAB, yes that's right, I only added one to simplify things a bit, and yes, this is from the server.. The Partition Table is GPT, do you think trying a different type may help?

I can see (logically) that the HDD (and therefore the partition) has connectivity via the output. The problem is your method of formatting (adding a FS to the partition). What does parted say about the HDD on the server. In this state, what do you get from this CLI command

Did you wipe the disk before starting over?

If you aren't positive - use the parted print command to see what happened.

The only reason to limit the partitions to 2T is to match the backup location disk areas. Actually, it may be smart to use less. Personally, I'd use LVM and start with much smaller LVs, only growing when necessary. If you use LVM, make 1 large partition and use that for the PEs.

If the GPT errors are seen again, run badblocks and look for disk failures. I would enter thinking the HDD is failing and look for reasons to return it ASAP, before it becomes a hassle.

Hi BAB,

I was using GParted Partition Editor GUI on the desktop machine.. I'd not done any of the drive formatting from the command line, not fdisk or parted.

Am I best to try performing the above actions with the drive installed in the server (all command line), or, taking it out and using my desktop machine (GParted GUI)?

TheFu: When you say about formatting to 2GB, do you mean 2TB? - just checking before I have a go...

I'm assuming he meant 2TB. 2GB makes no sense. While we are talking about partition size, I'll just say that you want the simplest plan you can go with. Figure out what your needs are and use the appropriate tools. I don't see where you need LVM. You are not trying to aggregate a bunch of partitions into one large space. LVM would just add a layer of unnecessary complication. The same thing for RAID. I have a multi HDD, multi partition LV so I have a single large space that has one mount point. It works, but it's not something you need to manage at this time.

I always add the physical disk to the chassis and use the tools that the OS provides. In your situation it would eliminate one variable (the other machine). As @TheFu mentioned, the commands are simple. I would start by seeing if you can reformat the FS (ext4) and see if that works. If not then you will need to delete the partition and then reformat the disk. I've never had to "wipe clean" a disk. Once you "reformat" or "delete the partition and reformat" the disk function. The old data might be there (in fragments), but not normally accessible. It will not be calculated as "used space".

Basic questions are definitely welcomed. They're best asked before starting. ;-)

I'm ok to just re-load all the data rather than trying to recover it.. just got to get it working first...

Hmm... this learning curve is just frustrating now.. I've had a stab, but thought I'd post my results now before digging myself deeper into a messy hole.

One of the new 4TB drives is in the server at /dev/sdc, all the following is via ssh.

I had a go with parted at the command line, but it wouldn’t let me create a 4TB partition (I wanted just one big partition per drive, which shouldn't be a problem with GPT), so I tried incrementally reducing partition size, until I got to 3TB, where upon parted decided to allow a 2.2TB partition:

I gave up on that one.

Then I tried formatting my new 2.2TB partition to EXT4 using mkfs:

I made the first partition primary and tried to make the second logical, as I didn't really know what I was doing at the time, (still clutching at straws), would it work better if it was one logical? Is there a way to get it to just make one partition to the maximum space available without having to specify the start and finish (as in [I hate to say] Windows, "just format the drive")?

Have I done anything wrong? Am I being daft? Can you see any errors in what I've done?

I was wrong! mklabel DOES make a GPT partition table.

With GPT disks, there isn't any "logical" partitions. There is only primary partitions and over 100 of those are allowed. Extended and Logical are a kludge for MBR/MSDOS partition tables.

The 2.2T limit seems ominous. That is the limit for MBR partition tables. Some disk controllers don't understand larger disks. Nothing you can do except swap them out if there isn't a firmware update.

Whenever there is any doubt - check your work with sudo parted -l - please post a current one for just this 4T disk so we can see what has happened so far. If all those errors still exist - it is a bad disk, bad controller, bad cable or some other issue. Was this disk brand new or did you get it from someone else or was it in a RAID set previously?

The rules seem pretty straightforward to me. Since the disk has been partitioned by you unsuccessfully already, I would remove the partitions (using parted)

# list the partitions
(parted) print
# This lists the partitions (minor (number))

#remove existing partitions
(parted) rm minor
# as many times as there are partitions
# I would check the partition number (minor) as these can change if one of them is a msdos logical partition

# create a new partition label (partition type)
(parted) mklabel gpt

# set the default unit to TB.
(parted) unit TB

# Create a 4TB partition size.
(parted) mkpart primary 0.00TB 4.00TB

# list the current partition.
(parted) print


After that you can add the file system using parted or directly using mkfs.

Although I have never created a partition as large as 4TB I can't see any reason that parted can't do the job. As you have already stated you have done so using the GUI equivalent.

I've followed the instructions given by bab1, but made a minor change... I found that you can specify the amount of drive to be used by the partition by percentage, instead of TB / GB. As I wanted one partition to fill the whole drive, I told parted to add a partition from 0% to 100%, thinking this would ace it.

Disappointing results:

So, there's a problem with creating an EXT4 filesystem.. using mkfs from within parted gave more helpful information than doing it just running it from the command line.

This is Ubuntu 14.04 (using kernel 3.13.0-43-generic), so I wouldn't have thought would have an issue with ext4..?

However, it has just allowed me to create an ext2 filesystem.. took about 5 minutes.

Tried then re-creating the filesystem as ext3, but same result as ext4.

There's a limitation somewhere.. maybe I need up update parted or mkfs, but as I said above, this is a fairly recent install, so perhaps it's a server hardware limitation??

Strange thing is, I have a 500GB ext4 drive installed and working fine, but that has an msdos partition table.

Just went to get the newn 2.2TB ext2 partitions UUID to mount the drive by fstab, and blkid can't see sdc or sdc1 that I've just created and can see with parted.

Ok - so the permissions cannot be correct.
What are the permissions for the other disk devices? See the difference?

I still think there is a HW limitation to overcome the 2.2T limit.

The sdc1 is listed as a character device (listed in red above), but not formatted as a block device). All the others have been successfully formatted so they are listed as block devices.

Earlier on you said you had 2 of these 4TB HDD's. Have you tried to partition and add an ext4 file system to that HDD? The disk controller that @TheFu is referring to is the electronics on the HDD itself, so trying the other disk will help in diagnosing the problem. I doubt that both HDD's would have the same problem. If you have the same problem with the other drive, I would think the host machine is at fault in some way.

I think the issue is with the disk controller on the motherboard.
Please try swapping some SATA cables around to see if the issue is related the port.

Also, please lookup the MB to see if there is firmware updates available - look through the change list for anything related to 2.2T drive limits.

Great advice guys, many thanks indeed.

I'll have a look at the motherboard later when I'm home, and also will try the other drive, and try swapping cables around.

As it's an unsupported server type (as I keep on finding DELL tech-support comments stating so on forums / help pages etc..) I doubt if I'll be able to find much in the way of a firmware upgrade, unless it's common to other server computers too.

I seem to have to pick an oddball server here, the CS24-SC: the CS stands for Custom Server, so very little literature is around for it. I did find one website that stated that Facebook recently upgraded from this type of server, a whole 10,000 of them, so there's a chance that these may have originally been ordered by Facebook, and used for a few years, before being sold on to people like me via ebay.

If tonight’s experimentation if fruitless, I'll just buy a NAS enclosure capable of taking these two 4TB drives, then my problems will hopefully go away... If anything has come out of this, it's improved my confidence at the command line, and has exposed me to functions / software I'd never used before - I can put it down as a worthwhile learning exercise. It'll also be good to know it's the machine that's got issues, not me! ;)

Googling "CS24-SC" gets lots of information re: the built in 2TB limit for partitions on this server. It's a hardware limitation. If you really want to have 4TB data stores on this machine you will have to use LVM to combine the 2TB partitions. Extra work, but if you need a contiguous 4TB then it is worth while.

Oh blimey, you're right...

Well, after all that work (big thank-you by the way) we've gone right round and back to the fundamentals!

Solution: £40 NAS enclosure... and all problems go away.. I'll put this down as a good learning experience in Ubuntu, drives, formatting, and hardware, and move on.

I'll remember all of this in case I want to add some 2TB drives in the future to the spare slots. It's been one heck of a learning curve, and one I'm glad to have had great tech-support through. Can't say enough thank-you's!!
