Hi everyone,
I was wondering what laptops you guys and gals have found recently that are worth taking a look at.
It should have decent Linux compatibility but if it is really a good machine I'm willing to fiddle with wifi drivers or whatever.
Normally my distro of choice is Lubuntu. I want to make this a slight upgrade since like my previous machine I plan to keep it for around five years; hopefully longer, my current laptop is in its death throws because my house got struck by lightning 3 times in one week, two happened on the same day .
My current laptop is a ASUS G74sx(which I love when it isn't being totally unreliable)
Specs of the 74
-Intel i7-2670QM @ 2.20GHz
-Nvidia 560M (2GB dedicated memory)
-Two 500gb HDD @ 7200rpm
-32GB RAM
-17.3" display (~44cm)
I use this laptop for basically everything (Programming, Hosting game servers, Astronomy, Chemistry, Car tuning, etc) so battery life isn't really a priority of mine(my current machine sits on my desk full time hooked up with power and Ethernet) nor is weight (current laptop weighs 10.5lbs (4.8kg)) I would like to keep the same screen size despite the fact that it is impossible to find a decent bag to carry it in the few times a year that I need to, but I'll change if the rest of the laptop is worth it. My caveat is that the thing needs to be reliable, the board of the G74sx was the only thing that didn't fail fifty times;Bonus points if you can find a laptop that does everything and is easily cleaned from dust. My price range is $2000-2600
If anyone would like to hear about my experiences living with the G74sx for the past ~five years I would be happy to write about it.
I took a look at some of the older threads (2006, 2011) about the topic and system76 came up a lot and seems to be pretty much what I want(I think they use a similar series of motherboards from ASUS no less) but upon further research I have found mixed reviews about the reliability and support of them and I'm not sure if I want to touch that, but most of the writing I've found is several years old and I would like to know what the current status is.
Anyways I'll post My own findings of potential candidates here.
Cheers
-Michael
