Printer not on at install, yet printer identification a success!!

Does linux poll the usb port and grab the attached printer id ESPECIALLY when the printer is fully 'off'?
I'm amazed it knew which driver to user without having the printer on at the install of Ubuntu.

Many printers are plug and play with the driver already on the system.

Which printer make/model is it ?
