I'm having various problems with Ubuntu. I'm running a Compaq dc7700 with 1gb of ram and what I believe is an AMD dual core 1.9 ghz.I downloaded my .iso straight from the homepage, i386, and checked the MD5. Everything looked good, so I burned to a usb, and this is where the trouble began. The usb wouldn't boot, and when it did, it wouldn't install. After repeated attempts, I went to the store and bought a pack of DVD-R's. Burned at 4x, inserted the disc, and it all installed seemingly fine. Didn't select the option to dual boot, installed over windows. However, when I went to boot up the computer, I had EXTREMELY bad graphical errors. Icons would be replaced with yellow boxes, white boxes would replace battery icon and wifi icon, and would not go away until it was clicked on. The screen on my Compaq is shattered, so I have to resort to a VGA output. The screen would appear as a picture in picture type appearance, with a 600x800 window of Ubuntu on top of a 1600x900 window. So I reinstalled, and that went away, but I still have the yellow boxes. The monitor is constantly flickering on and off like the VGA plug is being unplugged and plugged back in. This happens every time I login. Now, when I attempt to login, after applying updates, the desktop doesn't even appear, it just removed the login prompt and sits at my wallpaper with the Ubuntu logo in the bottom right and the version in bottom left(See pics).Could someone please help me with this? I no longer desire to be a cog in the window$ machine, but I really need a third parties opinion (and assistance) on this. http://m.imgur.com/SPdUhVu,v5pa7rn,pDiGQlw,IAyakSw Also, after the updates were applied, the boot screen was altered vastly. The 5 dots that would change color are now microscopic and have jagged edges, and the "Ubuntu" is no longer a logo, but the font from the grub menu. Im 100% new to the ubuntu scene, so any help would be greatly appreciated, but needs to be explained to a tee. Another problem I am having trouble creating a bootable usb. I've checked MD5 for i386 14.04,15.04, and also a linux mint, and NONE of them would boot. The bios would go to boot the usb, and it seemed to hang. By hang, I mean immediately after the BIOS finished up, it presented me with a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left, and then nothing. I had already changed the boot order in the BIOS option, so that couldn't be it. I can provide any information required, I just need to be told how to retrieve it.

That sounds like a bit older system.
My laptop from 2006 which is a bit newer barely runs Linux and not with Unity. I can get it to run just enough to install fallback or gnome-panel which is a much lighter weight gui.
Most would suggest for lightweight systems Lubuntu or Xubuntu. What video card/chip is very important on how well newer Ubuntu will run.
