I want to install linux/ubuntu on my laptop

Hi guys,

I tried some time ago to install ubuntu/linux on my laptop ---> "toshiba c55-a-1h1".This laptop has 2 video cards, one integrated and one separated, in windows 7 is quite easy to selected from the driver to use the best video card, but on linux i couldn't figure it out how to install/activate/use my best video card, it was anoying and i really want to install linux/ubuntu on my laptop, it's more eficient and well it's the best OS :).

Please help me if you can and know my problem.

Welcome. Install Ubuntu then post a thread if you have issues with your graphics card is the best way to go. We can't give you much help 'in theory'. We need you to have a running system and be experiencing the issue and posting info on it as requested to help much. You are currently in Windows (probably) so the commands that are familiar to the community here to diagnose your issues will not work in Windows.

I suggest that as a first step you download the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS .iso from here (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop), create install media on USB (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick) or disk (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/burn-a-dvd-on-windows), boot from it and choose the 'Try Ubuntu' option (that will be an option when you boot). How is the graphics working? Doubtful you'll be able to get the proprietary drivers working booted from install media but once installed on the hard drive shouldn't be a major issue, if they are required.

Sounds like you have a hybrid graphics card and we can generally get them working. There is an app called 'bumblebee' that is sometimes helpful from what I've read here.

I recommend you install 14.04 LTS for a start. Depending on how long ago it was that you tried Ubuntu, a lot may have changed and your card may work 'out of the box' now. We won't know until you try. :)
