Hi,
I had partition on my windows machine and installed with the ubuntu CD, version 9.1. Not been using my machine for sometime. Now , not able to connect to internet ( I had got the feedback earlier that I need to upgrade to later versions). But I was not able to do that.
As of now it looks like I donot have any new CDs, can I use the one sent by Ubuntu to upgrade to newer versions...Sorry that I am not a computer science specialist, but I want to use ubuntu at the user level..So sorry, I am not systems engineer either, so I blindly followed the instructions earlier on my first installation.
So could some linux installation geeks help me out with the installation..Or is there any way I get my basic wifi working so I can upgrade from my "ubuntu installer"
thanks

I recommend you upgrade to a supported release.
Upgrade to 12.04 : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePango...untu_12.04_LTS
Install 14.04 : https://help.ubuntu.com/14.04/instal...ide/index.html
For old computers with lower specifications, you may :
Read this link Old hardware brought back to life
Try Lubuntu or Xubuntu 14.04 LTS (supported until April 2017)
Alternative to Unity on 12.04 LTS : Gnome Classic
9.10 has been unsupported for a long time and there are no repositories available in order to upgrade, and if you could do so it would be only to 10.04, which is also unsupported.
I would recommend that you download and install the newest LTS version 14.04 which has 5 years support until April 2019. If you have a USB flash drive you can use that to install Ubuntu to almost any laptop from the past decade.

Note the comments above about Xubuntu or Lubuntu if your hardware is low spec.
Tell us more about the laptop hardware and any other uncertainties you may have about how to install and someone will try to help you more.

Just to add to ajgreeny's comprehensive and excellent info.
EOL release recommendations:

Disregard the part about 10.04 LTS at the beginning.

The Ubuntu live session should allow you to make an internet connection. Even the Ubuntu 9.04 disc should let you do that. If you make a wired (ethernet) connection to the router then things will be easy. We are assuming that you still have a valid service contract with an Internet Service Provider. With an internet connection you can download a newer version of Ubuntu from Ubuntu.com.
You have not told us the hardware specification of your machine. So, again, we are making an assumption that your machine will run the newest version of Ubuntu and that you do not need to use another member of the Ubuntu family of distributions.
Do not ask me to explain how to set up a wireless (WiFi) connection on Ubuntu 9.04. I think that I only had dial-up back then.
Regards.
