update fail

I have an old Dell E1705 lapton, running Xubuntu 12.04
It tells me I have 283 updates. When I try to install it says it cannot get package.
Everything is running fine, but I would like to get the updates.

1st thing's first. Establish the conditioon of the package manager .
Show us the results of terminal commands:


sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

How are you attempting to do the updates? Update manager? Apt-get update? And would you mind posting the error message? It may have a clue to the problem.

OK, don't know why but on subsequent attempts with update manager, it took the updates. Thanks for the help.

12.04 is out of support so it's better to install 14.04.2 or 15.04.
