14.10 upgrade, can not sign in. HELP!

Was having trouble with 14.04. Used upgrade to upgrade to 14.10.
PC boots up to login like this:
Ubuntu 14.10 HP tty1
HP login:_

My usual login user name and password do not work.
No idea what this HP login is about.
I can not get into the PC.

How is this solved?
Can a live 14.04LTS be used to solve this? If so, how?
Is it possible to download an iso and install without loosing everything.
All my important data is backed up but reinstalling all the programs will take hours.

Any help appreciated.

passwd change let me log in.

Now able to login but logs into text mode not graphic.
How to change this?
