This is to inform the ubuntu community that operating system 14.04 has collapsed and had to be reinstalled with complete loss of stored data. The person was surfing in a public London Library in Westminster Charing Cross just an hour before. Since replacement of the operating system - still Ubuntu - the boot screen mentions a defective fan, although the fan works well. Eventually you can verify some similar complaints. Hopefully this is no wrong detection of still good technology, due to an interest of the trade to sell new goods. Ubuntu usually never collapses, this was remarkable. A similar problem has occurred in a USA New York Starbucks branch where the complete data on the harddisk was just erased from one minute to another. The current laptop is a HP Pavilion Touch Smart Notebook.

For your general information : the person is a human rights activist and currently considering a general complaint or investigation under the Rome Statute in the International Criminal Court against a general exclusion of races from fair chances to apply for political asylum abroad or also migrate permanently as some statistical irregularities have occurred and a fair access to foreign migration appears to be inofficlally limited. Certainly this is no particular Ubuntu problem, however a collapse of the operating system related to relevant progressive change of the asylum system can seemingly not be excluded, a careful treatment of this theory is of course recommended, just my personal view.

Any information how to secure or change the operating system against viruses would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Hi

If you're on an unsecured public wifi then use a secure VPN or SSH connection to access the Internet (or TOR but that will be slower).

Turn on the firewall.

Take regular backup's of your computer everyday.

Monitor your computers health regularly.

That is a good start.

I am moving this thread into the cafe as it's not really a support question.

If the person is relating actual events, it is more likely that the person fell prey to the dangers of using unsecured public wifi than an indication of any fault in an operating system.

This ^^^

Public Wi-Fi hotspots are convenient, but there are risks associated with this convenience because data sent through public Wi-Fi can easily be intercepted, many mobile device and laptop users are risking the security of their personal information, digital identity, and money. Furthermore, if their device or computer is not protected by an effective security the risks are even greater.

Exactly.

I'm not sure if the video is viewable outside New Zealand, but this was recently touched on by one of NZ's TV shows: http://tvnz.co.nz/fair-go/safe-free-public-wifi-video-6304085

As this is not a support are, please ask this:

... in the Security support area, minus the rest, and please be aware of this, from the forum Code of Conduct:

Politics: This topic has caused serious problems in the past, and as such is subject to tight control. Discussion of the politics of open source is permissible within the Ubuntu/Linux and Other OS forum, no other political posting is permitted in any form in any other area of the forum.

As this is a discussion area, these threads tend to go one way. While we respect your right to have theories that this may have been the result of a covert act by an unnamed organisation or government, this is not the place to air them. Thanks.

Try to make the machine as secure as possible and that's as much as you can do. Good luck. :)
