View Full Version : [SOLVED] Broken dependencies 14.10--how to address?

Haven_McClure

I have one of those icons resembling a "Do Not Enter" sign on the top of my screen and a note saying I have broken dependencies. I am not able to update as a result. I ran Package Manager per the instructions and it identified three broken dependencies. But I'm not sure what to do with them from here. The dependencies are in an attached screen shot.

I did follow the system's advice and did a sudo apt-get autoremove, but got the following response:

haven@haven-Lenovo-Z40-70:~$ sudo apt-get autoremove
Reading package lists... Done

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
linux-image-extra-3.16.0-36-generic : Depends: linux-image-3.16.0-36-generic but it is not installed
linux-image-lowlatency : Depends: linux-image-3.16.0-41-lowlatency but it is not installed
linux-signed-image-3.16.0-36-generic : Depends: linux-image-3.16.0-36-generic (= 3.16.0-36.48) but it is not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

I assumed the system meant sudo apt-get install -f, so I ran that again, only to get the same error messages as listed in the first set of codes I posted.

He forgot one step with fixing unmet dependencies:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

... But before doing that, first check the space left on the system volume. Sometimes (rarely), users will get that error when the system volume does not have enough space left over to fully install the dependency packages.

Furthermore, while this command was running, I got a "system error" dialog box that came up two or three times. I kept hitting "Report Problem" and the error I got was related to a bug reported about here (http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/r8168/+bug/1385640)

Not sure if this is relevant, but I will bring it up given that I saw a Realtek driver (r8168) was mentioned during some of the error output. When installing 14.10 on a new laptop last January, I made the mistake of thinking that the wireless card was a Realtek 8168, when it was really a Broadcomm module--Realtek was the Ethernet port. I was having a hard time getting a wireless internet connection, and, following other people's directions, kept on trying to install an updated driver r8169. I was confused as to why I couldn't get wireless internet going, until I discovered my screw-up, and once I installed the Broadcomm fix per instructions, my wireless began to work like a charm. But I've had occasional problems with updating since then. Sometimes I've gotten an error message saying there's not enough volume in the sys folder, though this hasn't happened so much recently. It seems that the problems have accumulated to the point that I have a consistent icon on the top of my screen that looks like a "Do Not Enter" sign. In any case, I wonder if the unmet dependencies errors I've gotten were due to my messing with the r8168 and r8169 drivers, or if that's a coincidence.

Thanks for everyone's help with this so far.

Haven_McClure; Hello;

Allow me to point out:
MAFoElffen's intuition bears fruit.
This:

run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools 3.16.0-34-lowlatency /boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-34-lowlatency
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.16.0-34-lowlatency

gzip: stdout: No space left on device
E: mkinitramfs failure find 141 cpio 141 gzip 1

says that the system has no operating headroom and no can do.
Let's verify:

df -h
df -i

Now that comes back that the /boot partition is full. We can try the simpler method - that might work IF there is operating head room for the package manager to operate in:

sudo apt-get autoremove

But, probable we will have to get hands on with this, and maybe get down and dirty. We try the least invasive things 1st.

Hmm, can't quite tell if /boot is full, since it seems to show different things between -h and -i. Also, I don't know difference between /boot and /boot/efi

Haven_McClure; Welp;

Not looking real good for the home team:

/dev/sda2 237M 233M 0 100% /boot

With no headroom (100% capacity).

'df -h' shows disk space management ; 'df -i' shows the inode allotments ( one inode per file, run out of inodes then can not create additional files).

Situation at hand - Try:

sudo apt-get autoremove

and I do mean try. Most likely will not have the room to operate in but worth a try.

Now if that fails we try and remove the old kernels using the package management system.
We need to know the kernel that is presently booted, and as well all the other kernels that are installed:

uname -r
dpkg -l | grep linux-

Once we have the operating head room, then we try and update/upgrade the system.

maybe a long hard road

MAFoElffen

This will purge all old kernels except the current running kernel:

dpkg -l 'linux-*' | sed '/^ii/!d;/'"$(uname -r | sed "s/\(.*\)-\([^0-9]\+\)/\1/")"'/d;s/^[^ ]* [^ ]* \([^ ]*\).*/\1/;/[0-9]/!d' | xargs sudo apt-get -y purge

You will recover approximately 122MB for each kernel purged.

If you manage to get 14.10 running what are your plans for it? Support is running out in a month.

(http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=939075) Mrgs (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=939075), that's an excellent question. I intend to upgrade to 15.04. It would seem to me that having 14.10 running smoothly would be important in order to upgrade properly. At this point, I prefer not to do a clean install because it usually takes a considerable amount of work to re-download software and I have had difficulty in the past with losing metadata with a couple critical pieces of software despite my best efforts to preserve it. However, if fixing these issues on 14.10 seems to be too difficult, I might consider a clean install.

Haven_McClure; Yuk ; !

I do not know how you got into this situation with several kernels only now partially installed. But, lets drop down to a lower level and try this:

sudo dpkg -P linux-image-extra-3.16.0-{29,33,36,37}-generic
sudo dpkg -P linux-signed-image-3.16.0-{33,36,37}-generic
sudo dpkg -P linux-image-3.16.0-{29,33}-lowlatency
sudo dpkg -P linux-headers-3.16.0-{33,36,37}-generic
sudo dpkg -P linux-headers-3.16.0-{29,33,36,37}-lowlatency
sudo dpkg -P linux-headers-3.16.0-{29,33,36,37}

Hope this gets us some operating head room and then we can do some cleanup.

if at 1st you do not succeed

try something else ( sky diving excepted)

Well, I have my theories about how I got several partially installed kernels--it's several messages back.

I've run the commands and it looks like I have gotten some headroom.

I don't know if you need the output below, but this does show which of those commands executed fine and which ones executed with errors or didn't execute at all.

Haven_McClure; Yuk ; !

I do not know how you got into this situation with several kernels only now partially installed. But, lets drop down to a lower level and try this:

sudo dpkg -P linux-image-extra-3.16.0-{29,33,36,37}-generic
sudo dpkg -P linux-signed-image-3.16.0-{33,36,37}-generic
sudo dpkg -P linux-image-3.16.0-{29,33}-lowlatency
sudo dpkg -P linux-headers-3.16.0-{33,36,37}-generic
sudo dpkg -P linux-headers-3.16.0-{29,33,36,37}-lowlatency
sudo dpkg -P linux-headers-3.16.0-{29,33,36,37}

Hope this gets us some operating head room and then we can do some cleanup.

if at 1st you do not succeed

try something else ( sky diving excepted)

Haven_McClure; Humm .. Looks like

I got the cart before the horse, maybe should have removed " linux-signed-image " 1st .
But we are making good progress.
Let's do a bit of cleanup:
Now lets remove all the packages marked as rc.

dpkg --list |grep "^rc" | cut -d " " -f 3 | xargs sudo dpkg --purge

and now get a new look at things:

dpkg -l | grep linux-
and we see where we go from here .

progress made, one step at a time

Haven_McClure; Yeah ..

Not to shabby:
Let's poke at it a bit see if it bites back:

sudo dpkg -P linux-signed-image-3.16.0-37-generic

If that flies we try to purge the remaining partials .

it could happen

Haven_McClure; HoKay :

Well then !

sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-signed-image-generic

as we have as status ' iU ' for linux-signed-generic .

See if this makes the package manager happy .

maybe yes
maybe not so yes

Not so yes, apparently, but I wonder if I made a mistake by taking the system's suggestion to apt-get -f intall because apparently I have memory issues again. Should I go through those six dpkg commands again that freed up some space?

Let's go back to 'dpkg -l ' and see how we can help the package manager.

dpkg -l | grep linux-

and we see what we can do next .

Haven_McClure; Yeah !

Let's give the -36 and and -37 kernels a whirl.
(bearing in mind that "Consult /var/lib/dkms/r8168-dkms/8.038.00/build/make.log for more information. " will have to be dealt with at some point)

Can we do:

sudo dpkg -P linux-image-extra-3.16.0-36-generic

And a after hand thought, is this a total LVM install where we can rob the space from the /efi partition and give it to /boot ? When we can get to this point. Got to get the package manager happy and get this sytem updated !
-----------------
I got chores to get done, so I be away from the keyboard for a couple of hours.

I will be back and we pick this back up.

Error messages, space limits, not sure whether to cheer yet. Funny thing happened, though--got a "software update" notice, which I haven't seen in a while. Probably would give errors though as we still seems to have space issues. Not sure what you mean by a total LVM install. Ubuntu Studio 14.10 is the only system on this laptop.

Twix a rock and a hard place . No room to install anything to help, with no operating head room the package manager can not operate.
So we go behind the package manager's back, get us some room, and repair the damage later.
So, what does grub think about this sloppyation ? - as we prepare to get dirty:

uname -r
ls -al /vmlinuz*
ls -al /initrd*

we now look at removing the old kernels manually:
what have we installed:

ls -al /usr/src/
ls -al /lib/modules/
ls -al /boot/

Keep in mind everyone reading this thread, THIS is not a good thing to do ! A means of last resort when there is no other alternative.

when we break it

we fix it

Okay, before I attempt this, some new things have emerged. I shut down my laptop so I could carry it home with me. Then when I started it up--initially just white screen. Held down start button, started it again, got screen giving me several choices. I tried to log into the normal Ubuntni Studio, and it got error messages. Shut it down, started it up again. This time I hit Ubuntu Studio Recovery mode. It gave me a bunch of kernels from which to start up. I started the first low latency kernel in recovery mode (ended with a 41) and it gave me error messages and threw me back to the screen. Then I tried starting it up with the other low latency kernel in recovery mode (ended with a 34) and this time it took. Logged in like normal and everything looks fine except the only screen option it's giving me is 1920x1080 or something like that.

One thing, though: the "do not enter" icon is now gone.

So the stuff is getting serious. What do you think now? Proceed as is? I'm backing everything up just to play it safe.:shock:

Haven_McClure; Yeah;

Proceed. As to booting the -41 kernel, we know it is "bad" from the error reports.
However, as you have rebooted, will not hurt to take a look and see if we still have that 100% capacity condition.
If we now have some head room we can try to straighten things up with the package manager.

I am done for this session, calling it a day. We pick this up again on the morrow after I finish my morning chores.

Haven_McClure; OK;

Let's do this the dirty way.
Looking at the 3 directories we can see why the package manager is screaming and hollering. All three "should" reflect all the same versions for the corresponding files.
In booting grub there is no longer "boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-36-generic: to fall back to. So we do away with any of the related files. And fix the link at a later time if the package manager does not fix it for us.
We must keep the kernel you are booting, -34 , and you MUST insure that you do boot up with that -34 kernel !
So, let's get us some operating room:
in /usr/src/ directory remove;

sudo rm -rf /usr/src/linux-headers-3.16.0-37-generic
sudo rm -rf /usr/src/linux-headers-3.16.0-37

in /lib/modules directory remove ;

sudo rm -rf /lib/modules/3.16.0-{33,36,37}-generic
sudo rm -rf /lib/modules/3.16.0-{36,37}-lowlatency

And in /boot directory remove:

sudo rm /boot/*-3.16.0-{33,36,37}-generic

OK, now we have some operating head room, let's see if the package manager will now complete the install of the -41 kernel:

sudo apt-get -f install

And for this round, a bit of cleanup and insurance:

sudo apt-get purge linux-image-3.16.0-{33,36,37}*
sudo apt-get purge linux-headers-3.16.0-{33,36,37}*

Be alright when the package manager can not find files, just a shot gun approach here to make sure all is purged.

OK, now let's see what we have:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo update-grub

Hold your breath, cross your fingers and RE-boot. Let's see what we look like !

Did the system fix the symlink for the backup kernel ? Look :

ls -al /vmlinuz*
ls -al /initrd*

See if we have to take matters into our hands here and install a backup kernel IF we are clean at this point .

And is your WIFI now working ? Package manager is smart, real smart - but - as the case is here. sometimes needs a helping hand.

maybe YES

Okay, before rebooting I thought I'd post the output. So I went through the directory removals but forgot to do the removal from the /boot/ directory before doing an apt-get install -f, so I initially got errors. But once I ran the directory removal for /boot/ things began to run more smoothly. I refrained from doing the second "cleanup for insurance" purge because when it was about to do so, it said that it was going to remove some things associated with kernel 34, so I didn't want to take that chance. I went ahead and went through the updates. They seem to have worked. So I'm posting this mountain of output below in case it's informative.

Now for the reboot. Stay tuned. [-o

Okay, it rebooted, and better yet, it restored my previously set monitor settings so I won't need glasses after all.

But several system error boxes flashed at me. When I hit report, it linked me with this bug already reportedly reported. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/r8168/+bug/1385640

Now as for those last two commands:

haven@haven-Lenovo-Z40-70:~$ ls -al /vmlinuz*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Jun 25 12:56 /vmlinuz -> boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-41-generic
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Jun 24 17:28 /vmlinuz.old -> boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-41-lowlatency
haven@haven-Lenovo-Z40-70:~$ ls -al /initrd*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Jun 25 12:56 /initrd.img -> boot/initrd.img-3.16.0-41-generic
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 Jun 25 12:52 /initrd.img.old -> boot/initrd.img-3.16.0-41-lowlatency
haven@haven-Lenovo-Z40-70:~$

Wifi has been working the entire time. Firefox is upgraded too.

Haven_McClure; Hey hey !

Wonders never cease ... look'n good !
A small amount of adjustment:

Err http://ppa.launchpad.net utopic/main i386 Packages
404 Not Found

In your browser:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/mixxx/mixxx/ubuntu/dists/
You see that utopic is not supported. Disable this PPA and maybe the developers will catch up (??) [kinda doubtful, but ]

Now can you boot up with both the generic and the low latency Kernels ? If you are able, we will not be concerned with installing a back up kernel !

And as in my prior concern about r8168-dkms; I will leave it alone and we let the big boys sort it out. I do appreciate that you caught it and did the homework and passed it along .

Now then once the PPAs are disabled ->

are you finer than a frog's hair ?

There remains then just a tad bit of final cleanup .

Well, the system is operating pretty smoothly. How do I disable the PPA on Mixxx? I participate in the community forums there a lot so I can communicate with them directly. Maybe they're just sticking with the LTS versions now.

When booting up, how do I get to the screen where it gives me a choice as to which kernels to boot from?

Okay and yeah, looks like there's some cleaning up to do.

Actually I figured out how to disable the PPA and the yellow triangle with the exclamation point is gone on reboot.

Haven_McClure; Grub'n

To see the grub boot menu in a single ubuntu install install condition:
legacy partitioning (MBR) when booting up as soon as the bios screen clears, depress and hold the right -shift- key;
EFI system as soon as the firmware screen clears repeatedly depress/release the escape key ( 3 second window of oportunity) .

Once we know that both boot up, we do the clean up.

Okay, that has been done. Went about it a different way through trial and error. As was true of my Asus, Lenovo's BIOS screen is accessible via F2 when the laptop logo is showing. Once in the BIOS fscreen, hit escape key once to get out of the bios screen, hit the escape key a second time (just once, not repeatedly) as soon as the BIOS screen clears, select "Advanced Options" and that gives the boot choices. Found both the low-latency and generic versions of 41 and a safe mode start for each.

Both the low-latency and generic versions boot up. Grabbing my broom to do some sweeping...

Haven_McClure; Ho Kay !

Lets clean this up .

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo dpkg -C

If "-f install" comes back all 0's and "dpkg" returns only to prompt.
We call this good, and you are good to go.

-f install was zero, and dpkg returned to prompt. And it was good.
Loud soprano singing voice heard in background--don't know where that came from.
This thread is now marked solved.

Thanks, Bashing--om for untying this thorny knot. Thirty-seven messages and we're done!
