I am considering installing Xubuntu on Dell Dimension 4550. P4, 1 MB RAM, approximately 750 MB free for the OS. Will it run well? Would consider 2 GB RAM if performance was dramatically improved. How much RAM would be free then? Would installing Matrox PCI video card free up more RAM?

Thats an old card, but they love linux. It should have its own video ram, but don't expect a big difference.

I have installed xubuntu on similar spec machines and I expect it will run ok. Lubuntu will be a bit snapper. You can also try out Mate, it should perform well.

One gig of ram is ok, 2G is not necessary but a real nice touch. All of the above will run on 1G, but where the extra gig helps is in the programs you run.

The install will use about 8G of disk space when its all done. <snip>HDD<snip>

Got more question? Ask away :)

EDIT
I misread the 750G part, its 750M. Disregard the HDD

Mate runs very poorly on it.
