migrating from an older version to 14.04

I am currently downloading the 14.04 LTS to replace my existing version

I have been having problems for months now but I didnt care enough about troubleshooting
nothing is responding at the moment, and I dont even know how to retrieve my current version details

the concern is loss of data, which data will I be able to keep and which data will be lost during the update?

Hi

It depends upon how you intend to upgrade. It sounds like you intend a fresh install. In that case, unless you have your "home" in a separate partition, your data and settings will be lost. You should have your important data backed up "off machine" anyway? If not, can you do it now?
