Flickering screen

When run of a live USB, all was fine but the moment I installed it to disk the screen flickers. I if I change the resolution then it stops but only for a while, eventually going back to the flicker. According to lspci I have a "Mobility Radeon X1600" card. Is there a speciall drive that I might need to install?

Ok so it appears to do this on the Live USB too (well sometimes)

I eventually managed to try with fglrx. The computer then booted perfectly with the glowing E but then presented a black screen i.e. no desktop appeared
