View Full Version : [SOLVED] xfce Desktop not launching

Jonners59
May 7th, 2015, 03:12 PM
I hope someone can assist me.
I upgraded from 14.10 to 15.04 vivid using the update facility, but that didn't work, left me with 14.10 still running, so I then downloaded the iso and burnt to a DVD and so upgraded again. This time it upgraded perfectly except in Unity. I downloaded xfce components via "Synaptic" and everything seems fine, until I rebooted for the first time. Now when I log in I find that I have no panels and the desktop is also a mess. Fortunately, xfce has an "Application" menu in the desktop right click, so I can chose "Settings".

If I select "Panel" immediately I get a message to say gnome-panel was not loaded, would I like to "Execute" it, which i do and the desktop is restored. I have saved the session in "Session and Startup", but it makes no difference.

To note: I have a separate directory for my /Home and I am running x86_64
Any other information required, please ask and any cmd required.

I would back up my personal files, wipe the disk then install Xubuntu. http://xubuntu.org/

Jonners59

Oh, no.... That's not a solution. It'll be a simple config somewhere, always is.

tgalati4
May 7th, 2015, 05:55 PM
True, it might be a configuration file setting, but loading full Ubuntu to get XFCE seems like overkill. Perhaps open a terminal and run:

xfce4-panel

Take note of any errors.

Exactly how did you install xfce4?

There are a lot of pieces that need configuration to get XFCE to work properly.

Oh, no.... That's not a solution. It'll be a simple config somewhere, always is.

All depends what you did. Tacking it together from bits is not the way to go and can produce a dog's breakfast that's far from a simple tweak to fix.

You install xfce4 if you want the xubuntu desktop only. Nothing else. That's it. Then log out, choose 'xfce session' from the Sessions menu and log in. That simple. You can easily switch between xfce and Unity by logging out and in again.

The other option is to install xubuntu-desktop. Nothing else required. That will drag in ALL of Xubuntu and you may as well just start from the beginning and install Xubuntu. Despite that, changing between Unity and xfce is the same procedure as outlined above.

If you made a list of the bits you installed, uninstall them, open a terminal and:

sudo apt-get autoremove

Reboot. About the best I can come up with for the moment on the given information. ;)

Thanks guys.
Normally I use a set of cmds I found and kept a couple of years ago. And that is what I had used to build and run the machine these past few years perfectly happily, but after the 14.10 upgrade to 15.04 didn't go so smoothly, I searched again and took some new commands from the forum. They may well have done the same, but for this one issue...

tgalati4
I noted your list of dependencies and did a check in Synaptic, and 3 were missing. I had just created an auto start cmd in the Application Startup app, but have just disabled it upon your nice list, which I have check are now installed. just about to try a re-boot to test it.

OK tried all that and also tried to log in to GNOME, GNOME (Compiz), GNOME(Meta), xUBUNTU..... Each had it's flaws.

So xfce4 works, but with two error messages (which I can ignore, though they may give a clue to the problem) and I have to go in to "preferences" and then close it for Panel 1 to work - no changes required.

The messages are:

Modifying the panel is not allowed
Because the panel is running in kiosk mode, you are not allowed to make changes to the panel configuration as a regular user

Failed to show the preferences dialogue
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken

FYI to install xfce4 I used:
xfce4 in Synaptic
and then when having some problems I used

sudo apt-get install xfce4
which just told me I had the latest version.

Please remember, I had and was using xfce for a number of years and all my settings and prefs were already installed. It was the upgrade that caused the problems.

I wonder if there is a conf file or who owns it....

OK, so tried everything I could. I think the GNOME configs were confusing it so went with your make and break approach, rather than fix it.

Downloaded the iso for xUbuntu and ran the install, selecting "Other" for the HD burn as I have a separate Home directory. Selected the / directory and to format and install, and /Home without format. The install froze and had loads of error messages at something to do with CUPS. So I aborted, and tried again. The next time without formatting, but after the install completed and I did a reboot it wouldn't let me in, so I tried again. This time I used gParted to delete and recreate the /directory, then installed the new xUbuntu to the same and my /Home to my existing without formatting.

Booted fine, but spent the day getting the basics back up and running. I still have GNOME directories, and maybe others that I think are not needed any more, but worried about deleting anything.

The desktop will not allow me to put icons where I want them. I have two screens, and I like to put a few key launchers and bits n bobs on the desktop. I can move them about screen 1 but it will not allow me to put anything on screen 2!

The mouse is also a bit flaky. It seems to stick a bit and certainly does not move smoothly all the time.

Thunderbird is very slow and freezes up.

Any thoughts.

OK, this is going from bad to worse!
So, I have problems in that:
1. mouse gets sticky (sorry only way I can describe it).
2. A vitral Excel workbook I have been using for months keeeps crashing, but it may not be just that ap. WHat happens is the ap stops working, I then try and kill it with xkill, but it still appears on the desktop and when I change desktops it flashes up every where.... Really spooky.
3. icons do not stay where I left them and that I can only get them on the left screen/monitor

And now, in trying to fix all this I can not launch my second monitor. I just have 1.

this is wasting so much time. I don't want to go through yet another rebuild.

Any one help, PLEASE!!!!

What are the SMART parameters of your disk drive?

sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda

Xubuntu is a pretty solid distro and the fact that you are having so many problems might indicate a hardware problem.

Did you perform a media check on the USB or DVD that you created to install Xubuntu?

It was all working fine until the latest upgrade. As a result I tried to reinstall xfce and it has all gone down hill from there. 5th attempt.

I now have my desktop working. As of this AM I had the keyboard in GB, but the keys were all over the place. I think I have that sorted now too. - soon know when I reboot!

BUT:
I can't get Libre working, it says it didn't complete the install, I have retried installing several times.
AND
I can't play DVDs, though not too important on this machine at this stage.
I am also a bit p155ed off as I have done a more thorough install this last time and now i have lost all my apps and their settings, built up over the past 4 years...
And the Microsoft Office apps in crossover are now hard to find, not displaying in the menu as they used to. I have tried editing it, but they never show.

I do not think this is to do with the DVD or HW, I think this is a combination of configs, maybe conflicting and reinstalling apps.

Sorry, you need to install smartmontools first.

sudo apt-get install smartmontools

Yes, upgrading can be painful. In-place upgrades can cause problems. Clean installs mean you have to reconfigure everything. Sometimes you get lucky and an in-place upgrade will work as you expect. My suggestion of a clean install comes from a troubleshooting background--it's easier to fix things from a known condition. A clean install gives you that. An in-place upgrade leaves old and new libraries and configuration files on your system, which can make troubleshooting problematic.

There is an XFCE menu editor. You will have to search for a tutorial on how to use it.

http://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu#create_sub-menus

http://askubuntu.com/questions/76042/how-can-i-add-items-to-xfce-root-menu

If you made a backup of your /home folder, then you should still have the old configuration files, then you can cut and paste the changes.

Everything is fixable. Patience is key.

Hi

tgalati4 is pretty good so work through the problems with him.

I wanted to point out the obvious last resort though; reinstall 14.10 :)

Kind regards

I managed to fix the Menu, but also reinstalled MS Office in Crossover in the mean time. Not ideal, and not as elegant as it was, but it works.

As per above scan, nothing wrong with the HW, never thought there was. The issues I am having, that of keyboard language is a known issue. I have seen a couple of blogs about it. Seems that changes are not recognised and require a logout, login step with the change being made at the login screen which sets the default language/setting. Then the two - and probably conflicting - keyboard settings tools need to be set to default, ignore all installed layouts downloaded.

As for desktop not remembering layout, that too is a recognised issue. I have seen a bug or two about this, but I think my issue here is that the right screen will NOT allow anything to be saved to desk top SOMETIMES afterboot up, and other times it does. So when it does the layout is made and saves, but when logging back in IF the second screen does not allow items on the desktop, then they are rejected and the whole config is recreated. This is seen by the number of config files in the ./home/.conf/.xfce/desktop. I do NOT know what causes this intermittent fault. If the desktop right screen accepting items always was fixed could then see if that resolves the overall problem.

Screenlets opening in different places after reboot, don't know why it can't remember where to put items.

The screen save/flashing that comes up from time to time, is annoying.....

The freezing of apps, such as MS, Thunderbird, is also annoying.....

LibreOffice "installation not completed" issue...

These are other items that need a fix and I have no idea how to go about.

DVDs now play. Installing the Restricted Extras is not the complete solution, a .sh cmd has to be installed. But I found that hidden on the Ubuntu website.

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

Getting there and now somewhat useable.

SOmething else I noticed, may be able to shed some light on:

/home/baronipc/.config/xfce4/panel
There are loads of folders labelled "launcher-##" where ## is a number from 3 to 42, with some numbers missing. I am assuming that these are cong files for verious panel settings from past and present. Should they all be deleted and then let the system create 1 new one as with the desktop version? If so how?

Thanks for the help... :-)

Your disk has 13K hours on it, so it has some age. Your disk has 65k command time-outs--that is unusual. Perhaps you need to reseat or replace a cable. The rest of the disk looks OK. So now on to the software problems. Look through your log files for other errors.

less /var/log/syslog

Spacebar to page forward, "q" to quit. Post any errors, no need to post the entire log file.

Before deleting the XFCE launcher files, examine the dates and see if the numbering is consistent with the calendar dates. It's possible that if you have "Save Session" checked then every time you shut down, XFCE will keep track of each application that is open and try to open it when you reboot. This doesn't work with every application. If you want to preserve your desktop between work sessions, simply put your computer to sleep. When you wake it, then all desktops and applications on those desktops should be exactly as you left them. When shutting down, I normally have no expectation that my work session will be preserved correctly or at all.

So, I would turn off "Save Session" and see if you have a cleaner work space experience.

Yesterday she wouldn't allow any changes to the 2nd monitor, so it screwed up my desktop again. BUT she has booted up well today. The 2nd monitor allows me to save to desktop, so was able to fix alignment from yesterday. Overall she seems better.

Hi

I wanted to point out the obvious last resort though; reinstall 14.10 :)

Kind regards
Hiya Matt
Done that several times so far... Really do not want to go through again!

Your disk has 13K hours on it, so it has some age. Your disk has 65k command time-outs--that is unusual. Perhaps you need to reseat or replace a cable. The rest of the disk looks OK.
Wow, you could gleen all that from that log. I have two HD did it say which one had the ify cable? I'll look in to that, if you can tell me, please.

So now on to the software problems. Look through your log files for other errors.

less /var/log/syslog

Spacebar to page forward, "q" to quit. Post any errors, no need to post the entire log file.
OK, this is any line with a Warning. No errors. Apologies if any lines are duplicated or missing. I found it easier to just follow the path to the file and open it. I did a search on error and this is what I got. As today she opened better, I may need to do this again, if nothing is found if/when she doesn't behave. Anyway. Hope this helps.

Understand, but I would rather shut her down. There does seem to be an acknowledged bug, though I think my config goes up the creak, NOT because of the bug, but because sometimes the 2nd screen does not allow anything to save on it. I strongly suspect that when that is identified and sorted all will be OK...

Of which, any thoughts on the LibreOffice issue.

THANK YOU. Really helpful stuff.

Understand that there is no "second screen". The Xorg Window Server uses a Super Desktop which is the summation of your horizontal and vertical resolutions of both displays. The two screens become portholes to view parts of the same Super Desktop. It's possible that the icons you are trying to save are simply hidden. Try moving your displays so that they are side-by-side, or one on top of the other. Then observe where the launchers are placed when you create them. They don't behave the way you expect. This is either a bug or a feature.

As far as determining which drive is which:

sudo fdisk -l

/dev/sda is the first disk on your system.
/dev/sdb is the second disk on your system.

/dev/sda is the one that I suspect has a cable issue.

A number of your problems might be due to old configuration settings that aren't compatible with the more recent XFCE version. I ended up deleting the xfce4 settings ~/.config folder. In fact, I think I may have just deleted ~/.config and started all over again with my application settings too. Lots of bits didn't work right immediately after the upgrade. I upgraded by doing a new install to / and then once I'm happy it works, edit /etc/fstab to bring in my /home partition and reboot.

That makes a lot of sense and ties in with my observations of the "2nd" screen.

As for the icons. They appear on screen 1 but if I try and move them to screen 2, then they just fly back to their original position. Note. this is NOT all the time, but when it does happen it messes up my config file and I have to reset them all after a login that works. And apologies for using 1st and 2nd screen, but that's the best way to describe.

It is as if sometimes something is not loading correctly, probably in x11 or Lightdim or nVidia... Beyond me.

That is much the same as I did.... As per, it may be something else. Nvidia is notoriously difficult, and there was a bug out about it not working after the upgrade to 14.10 and that may have continued on to 15.04 in some way.

So first of all, I created a thread to fix the LibreOffice problem - seems that i am not the only one with this, and found a website with the solution. So that is fixed, here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2278818

OK, this am, first boot up the 2nd screen would/does not allow the icons on it. Screenlets are all fine now and seem to work every time. So, hopefully in here somewhere there must be something that explains why it should be failing - the system log.

I am not convinced the nVidia card sw is installed correctly, on the basis that the settings manager is not complete, like I have on other machines. Reinstalling can be quite a risk, especially on a hunch.

Any ideas, please?

Well colord is the daemon that manages color profiles for printers and monitors. It's possible that your video driver really is having problems.

So you think it just might be this line

May 19 07:20:15 Baroni-PC colord[950]: (colord:950): Cd-WARNING **: failed to get session [pid 863]: Unknown error -2 May 19 07:20:23 Baroni-PC colord[950]: (colord:950): Cd-WARNING **: failed to get session [pid 1005]: Unknown error -2

There have always been issues with nVidia cards, mostly blank screen after update/install, but I noticed that the manager was not complete when I opened it, which is something I have seen before and was advised by nVidia that it had not installed properly and to reinstall. Not an easy thing and fraught with possible dangers. But I will try and track down the lessons I had learnt and have a go. Shall feed back what i did and if it worked.

Actually, on completing this reply, I was going to take a screen shot of it - before and after - but it has gone!!! Checked the Menu Editor too, and it has definetly GONE! ODD!

OK, I think I have success.
Simply I reinstalled the nVidia drivers.. As follows:

First remind yourself which card you have:

lspci -vnn | grep -i VGA -A 12

Then install the nVidia repository

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa -y
And quick update:

sudo apt-get update

Then follow the link to the nVidia website, fill in the drop down questions to find the correct driver. No need to download it, just note the number.
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?ClickID=arrzsn0oksvnwspz0ykprt5pslvyvvs nosks

Then enter the cmd as below with the correct number in terminal - mine was 346 - to download and install the driver

sudo apt-get install nvidia-346
For safety and luck would have it, this worked better for me, I also did the following which installed a later version

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

Then go in to Synaptic package manager (if you do not have it yet, then this is a good time to install the vital app) and then in to Settings -> Repositories -> Additional Drivers
Choose your driver and "Apply Changes".

Thanks tgalati4 for helping identify the problem.
