as i'm a sort of missionaire, installing linux on friends pc's, i needed a good live cd for administration (partitioning including ntfs resizing, hardware support check, etc.) tasks.
i would have used the ubuntu live cd, but imo it's goal to promote ubuntu.
knoppix was just too much (don't need a heavy de), system rescue wouldn't start, and qtparted was a requirement (many don't have it)... there are several projects, but i need a live cd to work with long term (read: i don't want a half-dead project)
finally, i've found gnustep: http://www.linuks.mine.nu/gnustep/
it's morphix/knoppix (well... debian) based, knoppix's strong hw detection, uses windowmaker (nice and light window manager). runs very smoothly, has relevant apps.
besides some ubuntu install cd's, this is the cd i'll always carry along :)
ps: don't look for the root password, do it the ubuntu way -> use sudo
