Recently I succeded making a win7 / ubuntu 14.04 dual boot. Worked fine for several hours.
Then, the icons and top bar dissapeared. Followed many advices, couldnīt get to fix it. So Right now I just reinstalled the ubuntu partition. I installed the updates.
But still Iīm under the angst and fear that it might be an unstable OS. Is there anything I can do to prevent to have the same problems again?

No not really, it sounds as if you may have a hardware issue if items are randomly disappearing from from your machine as you state. perhaps you should run a hard drive diagnostic to see if some issue you are aware of exist.

Hello!

I don't think it likely that that is a hardware problem.

Without knowing exactly what happened, what advice you may have gotten from where and what you did previously to attempt to correct the problem, it would be nothing more than a stab in the dark to advise you now.

14.04 is pretty stable, having had a year of bug fixing.
