install hangs

This issue occurs during installation of either Ubuntu 15.04 or Kubuntu 15.04 from CD or from USB stick. Installation proceeds through steps, pick language, keyboard, time zone and manual partition (sda12, this is a multi-boot setup). When I click the install button it shows a message "creating EXT4 file system 0%" and goes no further. It set there 3 hours and never completed.
This is a Dell computer w/C2D, 2M ram. Its been running Ubuntu since probably 7.04 and never had this issue before. Any ideas?

Can you use advance options and manually create the file system?

On a side note..

Unity takes a lot of resources, is your box up to it?
