View Full Version : [SOLVED] 14.04.2 wont dual-boot

Inoki
April 26th, 2015, 09:22 AM
I installed Ubuntu from a LiveCD next to Windows 7 in the following way:
Windows had 3 primary partitions, so I had to create a 4th extended one, under which I created:

1 / partition
1 swap partition
1 /home partition

Boot was set to legacy due to Win 7 being installed. Shortly before installation I changed even boot priority to Legacy first.

Installation went smooth, except for now when I'm greeted by GRUB and select I want to boot Ubuntu nothing happens. Nothing happens after selecting recovery boot for Ubuntu either.

I tried to change the boot priority settings in BIOS to UEFI first, to no avail, although it seemed it would work. After re-installation with these settings and reboot the Windows entry was completely missing from GRUB, so I did Boot Repair while booted into the system, restarted, it worked once, got me to the desktop, installed updates, rebooted, didn't work again. What it did was it created another Windows entry on /dev/sda2, so now I have a duplicate.

Tried Boot Repair several times from a LiveCD, to no avail. Tried re-installing the system about 4 times always with different settings (boot priority set both to legacy and UEFI), nothing.

Please have a look at Boot Repair's boot log:

=================== Suggested repair
The default repair of the Boot-Repair utility would reinstall the grub2 of sda5 into the MBR of sda.
Additional repair would be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s

The settings chosen by the user will not act on the boot.

I'm the one that suggested Anathaen post about his boot problems here via mailing list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-gnome/2015-April/002939.html). I stressed there and will stress again DO NOT RUN THE RECOMMENDED REPAIR until someone has looked at that boot info summary because sometimes it can make matters worse.

This is definitely going to take a more experienced pair of eyes than mine but I do know that if Windows is installed in legacy BIOS mode then Ubuntu should also be installed in legacy BIOS mode. The same is true regarding UEFI mode. I do see that the live USB used to produce this boot-info-summary may be booted in EFI mode:

=================== UEFI/Legacy mode:
BIOS is EFI-compatible, and is setup in EFI-mode for this live-session.

These issues are frequently quite easy to resolve but if a user is impatient and just keeps trying the wrong things then the situation continues to get worse, and therefore more complicated to resolve. So please wait for some proper guidance.

With any luck oldfred will notice this soon. He's excellent at troubleshooting these things.

Can you still boot Windows?

Yes, without issues, only there are two Windows entries at boot, but I always pick the one at /dev/sda1 and it runs.

Do not turn UEFI on.
Your Windows install is BIOS only. Typical 100MB boot and main install.
Windows in UEFI mode on gpt drive has an efi partition, a system reserved partition and main install.

Windows only boots from MBR(msdos) partitioned drives with BIOS boot mode. If you convert to UEFI you also convert drive to gpt and then your current Windows is erased.
Windows only boots from gpt partitioned drives with UEFI.

I am glad to see that Boot-Repair even though booted in UEFI mode still is suggesting a BIOS grub reinstall to MBR as default fix. I thought it might try to convert to UEFI which would be wrong.
But to be on safe side I would always boot installer or Boot-Repair in same mode as your install. Or better to be in BIOS boot mode for live installer.

You can run autofix, but install in MBR and rest of install looks ok. But if you already are getting grub menu and can boot Windows from grub menu, grub is working and you are past what Boot-Repair can fix.

What brand, model system and what video card/chip?
Can you boot recovery mode or second Ubuntu entry in menu. May be in sub-menu.

Hey,

it's a Lenovo G505s (not manufactured anymore) laptop with an AMD A8-4500 processor with Radeon HD graphics (2 GB VRAM).

Nothing works when I choose to boot Ubuntu, not even recovery mode. When I do that the screen just stays blank (dark purple).

I do not know AMD graphics, but depending on age the correct driver may be a legacy driver.

Have you tried nomodeset?
At grub menu you can use e for edit, scroll to linux line and replace quiet splash with nomodeset.

I only have some older links on AMD. But procedures should be similar.

I've tried NOMODESET, to no avail.

I don't think the driver is the issue since when previewing from the LiveCD everything went totally smooth, no lags, spikes, slowdowns, the desktop was beautifully rendered. In fact, the LiveCD ran noticeably better on this machine than mine, which is a newer model. The GFX is a Radeon HD that may be max. 2 years old, not even that. I think that laptop was a last year's model.

I recall that "glitch" that happened one time (as I mentioned earlier), when I booted into the system, did (accidentally) boot repair from there, not the LiveCD, it allowed me to enter the desktop once, through the advanced options choosing the latest kernel, but only once. Very strange.

That time I installed updates, rebooted and again it didn't work.

Recovery never worked. It got stuck at saying "Loading initial ramdisk..." (that's how I remember it)

I'm thinking this is all because of Windows. Something tells me if I'd throw that thing out Ubuntu would work, but I can't, since, unfortunately, it's still needed on that machine.

If you get grub menu, Windows should not interfere with Ubuntu booting.
There is some driver or setting not quite configured correctly.
If you remove quiet splash from linux line (same place as you added nomodeset) what errors appear on screen?

Some quick googling of Lenovo G505s leads me to believe that it may have hybrid graphics which I have very little hands on experience with. The following command (run from the live DE since it will boot) should render some specific graphics info:

lspci -v -s `lspci | awk '/VGA/{print $1}'`

Just a BTW - something I learned recently about temporarily editing the grub boot while troubleshooting an unrelated bug - I had the best results editing like this:

after using the arrow keys to navigate to the line beginning with "linux /boot" you'll notice that line ends with "quiet splash $vt_handoff". The boot parameter belongs between the "quiet splash" and "$vt_handoff" like this:

quiet splash whatever_boot_parameter $vt_handoff

Why it works better before "$vt_handoff" I don't know

If I'm right about that PC having hybrid graphics I believe it should be possible to adjust the BIOS to determine which chip is used and one may work where the other does not.

I do not think order of boot parameters matter.

These were mostly users installing in UEFI mode, but optional settings in UEFI/BIOS should be similar.

Some Lenovos comes with a physical switch that enables you to select which graphics adapter to use.

Nothing happens, no errors are displayed, just a blank, dark purple screen.

I will try the command suggested by Kansasnoob and post the result when I get on the other computer.

Then you are not seeing boot process in text mode. Screen may be too dark. Some systems you just have to use whatever key you use to increase brightness. One link above mentioned this boot parameter. acpi_backlight=vendor not sure if instead of nomodeset or in addition?

I tried the boot parameters (w/ and w/o nomodeset, removed quiet splash) with acpi_backlight=vendor, hit CTRL+X to boot, again the same blank screen, nothing happening.

Attaching the output of inxi -F:

You now know more than I do - I didn't even know about inxi - anyway that does show hybrid graphics:

Graphics: Card-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Trinity [Radeon HD 7640G]
Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Sun PRO [Radeon HD 8570A/8570M]
Display Server: X.org 1.16.0 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
Resolution: 80x24

So I'd think there would be a way to choose whether the system wants to boot using 7640G or 8570A/8570M, probably in BIOS settings???????

During the live session we know it uses the Radeon HD 7640G. I wonder if the installed OS could be using the other???????

Someone with more knowledge regarding that hardware may have an answer - possibly time to change the thread title?

I think I have tried possibly every boot parameter I could find. I'm attaching the GRUB screen to check if there's something wrong:

Try going to grub command line and run this:

From a grub command line to see available settings pressing <c> & escape to get back to menu
vbeinfo

Also since you get grub menu, video is working up to that point.
I might try commenting out the gfxmode line, just add # at beginning. And then with or without nomodeset.
The gfxmode line is to use the graphics of the install, but if that is not working then you have more issues.

The output of vbeinfo shows the following (see image), other options didn't work.

Do not know why you have issues, I know nVidia a lot more as that is what I have.
Your VESA mode seems to be working but when it tries to switch to AMD then you have the issues.

I might try. changing to this.
GRUB_GFXMODE=1366x768

Not sure then if you also need other boot parameters like the back light one or not?

Now that you mention back light, when I ran the LiveCD I spotted 3 lines of text there (splash) with a short error related to back light, that it could not be found or smth, but it still ran normally from the LiveCD. I also tried all boot parameters for back light, to no avail.

I will see what I can do.

Tried everything that has been suggested. I guess I'll just have to leave it for now and perhaps when Windows won't be required on that machine it will be easier to get it running.

Thanks for all your help.

I really don't think the fact that this is a dual-boot has anything to do with the booting problem. It might be worth trying a fresh install of Vivid (15.04) just to see if it works better with that hardware. I'll grant you that it's only supported for 9 months but 14.04.3 will likely ship with Vivid HWE (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack) sometime in August, or you could go through two upgrades; 15.04 -> 15.10 -> 16.04 if 15.04 does work.

Thanks lads, this was resolved after I re-installed the computer and setting all BIOS settings to legacy mode.
