I'm running Kubuntu 15.04 on a Lenovo Z580. If I let my computer sit for a while, it will bring up a screen that demands a password in order to resume activity. Is there a setting that will prevent this timeout? I've looked through System Settings and haven't been able to find anything. I've already set my preferences so that no password is needed on the initial login.

What settings do you have for screen locking?
In System Settings > Workspace > Desktop Behaviour > Screen Locking
Changing something in there might give you what you want.

I found that setting in 15.04 and changed it. But in 14.10, the choices for Workspace Appearance and Behavior are:

Desktop Effects
Workspace Appearance
Accessability
Default Applications
Desktop Search
Window Behavior
Workspace Behavior

but nothing called Desktop Behavior. And I can't find Screen Locking in any of those.

Do you know if Screen Locking exists in System Settings at all in 14.10?

Yes, there was configuration for screen locking in Kubuntu 14.10, in System Settings. This is where the screen saver was selected.

System Settings has been rearranged a bit for Plasma 5. Everything is in there, however. I'd just go through all the options one-by-one so you know what's where.
