I wonder if anyone can suggest a reason why I can't install 12.04 from either DVD or USB?

I have downloaded 3 times. I have checked the MD5 each time. I have made both DVD and USB stick from Unetbootin AND rechecked the MD5 afterwards.

I have tried these DVDs and USB on two different computers where I have already installed Ubuntu on several occasions.

I get the selection menu to run the live CD etc but every time I try to go forward from there it tells me it cannot find a file system on the cd or usb.

I've done it so many times without problem before that I feel like I'm going crazy. :p

I wonder if unetbootin is the problem. Have you tried burning a DVD with either brasero or k3b, and have you tried startup disk creator in ubuntu to prepare your live USB? I always use dd to write the ISO filesystem to a USB but I can't remember whether this will work in 12.04. There was a particular Ubuntu release from when you could use dd, but I can't remember which one this was. If dd makes you nervous (and I wouldn't blame you!) have a look at sudodus' bootable USB tutorial here:

Thanks for the reply. Yes As I said, I have made both DVDs and USB stick. DVDs were made with K3B and USB with Unetbootin. Just can't get what I'm doing wrong - It has to be me but I just don't get it. No I've not tried disk creator. When I look at the DVD or USB using Ark I can see all the files but it refused to acknowledge they are there.....

I'm never using again the burning route, as like you i met so often troubles. So now multisystem is my choice (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/multiboot-create-a-multiboot-usb-from-linux/) . But you can also install directly from the hdd http://askubuntu.com/questions/340156/install-ubuntu-from-iso-image-directly-from-hard-disk-of-a-system-running-linux
