So, in some gnome programs, my menu bar entries are all run-together.

Screenshot attached.
261465

From top to bottom for contrast:
VideoLanPlayer (Normal)
Tetravex (Possibly Normal)
Eye Of Gnome (Problem Menu)
Abiword (Problem Menu)

I'm unsure if this is a theme setting or something else I'm missing.

Appearance Settings:
xfce-dawn
lubuntu icons
Droid Sans 10 font

Toolbar style: Text next to icons

Window Manager:
Style: Smallscreen

I want to say there used to be a gnome and kde compatibility setting.
But, I only remember those in Compiz. And, I've gone out of my way to not run Compiz this go-round.

Am I just missing a library?

you should find usefull errors either into xorg.0.log or syslog (probably a third installed applet not updated/compatible)

In Xubuntu 14.04, you need to upgrade Xfce to version 4.12. You indicate you have 4.10. This will give proper support for the client side decorations (header bars).

Upgraded to XFCE 4.12 through PPA. (Xubuntu-dev).

Problem persists. Even synaptic is in on the act, now.

So, this is tied to the system theme.
Using any xfce theme, menus get run together.

I've changed my system theme to Orion, and menus are showing appropriately.

So, this is tied to the system theme.
Using any xfce theme, menus get run together.

I opened Abiword on an Xubuntu 14.04 system that still had Xfce 4.10 and could not reproduce your menu problem - I cycled through all of the supplied themes (Adwaita, Albatross, Bluebird, Greybird, High Contrast, Numix, Orion, Raleigh). All menus look normal. I them repeated this on another computer that had been upgraded to Xfce 4.12 and again no difference in menus. All look normal. No further ideas yet.

FYI, I have attached a screenshot of Abiword in Xfce 4.10. Greybird theme in use.

(I do see header bars display as they are supposed to in 4.12, so there's that - but I have only one application installed that uses them).

Themes affected are XFCE-4.0, 4.2, b5, basic, cadmium, etc.
Extra themes were pulled from packages "gtk2-engines-xfce" and "gtk3-engines"xfce."
Likely gtk2-engines are the problem themes.
