Hello everyone I was wondering if there was a different menu for Ubuntu 14.04 a side from that sidebar menu.
I was hoping there was one like Mint uses the Whisker menu, I'm using Ubuntu 14.04.

Thanks for any help with this.

the whisker menu is a plugin for xfce4, so you want xubuntu for that. ubuntu uses the dash menu.

Are you saying the dash menu is that sidebar one that's preinstalled when you install Ubuntu? thanks so much

The side bar is the Launcher. It is a dock. The Dash is the overlay that appears when we click the Ubuntu icon at the top of the Launcher or tap the Super key. which in turn is the key with the flying windows logo on it.

You might be happier with Ubuntu Mate. That allows a great variety of modifications to the user interface

There is the Classic Menu Indicator for Ubuntu:

Whisker Menu is for XFCE desktop environment - used in Xubuntu.

If you want to try different desktop environments, just install them, log out, choose the desktop environment, log back in. Don't install '*buntu-desktop' anything. That is like installing another flavour on top of what you already have. Messy bloat. Just the DE doesn't drag in the whole OS.

For instance, if you install xfce4> log out> choose it from 'Sessions'> log in, you will be using the same desktop environment as Xubuntu, without Xubuntu (the default apps, dependencies, etc. that is). If you want to change back, follow the above instruction and choose 'Unity' (or might be calle Ubuntu Desktop, I don't use so unaware).

You can try a multitude of desktop environments exactly the same way without installing a ton of other things you don't want/need. If you don't like, uninstall and purge/autoremove after.

Good luck.

Just looking at this (http://www.linuxmint.com/screenshots.php) and it appears you can get Mint in four different flavours of mint right off the bat. ;)

if your looking for something like unity but more customizable, you should try ubuntu gnome, using extensions it can easily be tweaked.

here's an example of 1 of the menus available, it's as simple as turning it on.

lxde which is used by Lubuntu and xfce4 (Xubuntu) can be installed through Software Centre. That simple. I think Cinammon and some others are in there, too. Have a search. Also have a look for RazorQT which is pretty light and I enjoyed it when I played around with it.
