Help on building a trimmed down Ubuntu

Hi all

I guess I'm too lazy to install Arch or the like, but I'm not a big fan of glossy desktops either. So far this forum has provided much better and friendlier support than my earlier Linux attemps ;-)
So what would be a semi-noob route to get a Ubuntu install with a lightweight DE, and the only software I will be using (for this laptop) is Seamonkey, VLC, maybe some office-tools and that would be it. "Downgrading" to fluxbox has ended with disaster so far...

Any ideas?

PS Wifi only on this laptop has been a hurdle... DS

Use the Minimal CD (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD) and add want you want to that; you get to choose everything that way but still have the basic Ubuntu system underneath with all its apt-get package management, etc etc, for ease of use.

Thanks, that's my latest attempt, but unfortunately I get stuck, because I can't get the intel 7260 working. I've managed before doing a backport, but from command line I'm lost :(

It also depends on what you call "lightweight". There are different flavours of Ubuntu. I cannot say if they are lightweight but even their developers might admit that the UI is not "glossy." But very good nontheless.

you opt for a 'lightweight DE' but avoid the too exotic ones (not full maintenance so buggy) the best is probably ubuntu-mate (gnome2) or choose the coming 'vivid' ( but xubuntu/kubuntu still buggy) wich is the best one at time, even if its not a 'lightweight DE

I have three netbooks, two of them of them asus eeepc 900s. All have 2 GB of RAM.
I've install lubuntu 14.04, (32-bit) on them and I'm happy with performance.
In addition to the standard LXDE desktop, I've installed fluxbox, which is my preference.
